Where is the respect for Scotland and its MPs that was promised in 2014?

I AM concerned about the disrespect shown towards Scottish MPs in the House of Commons. Of course, no-one expects their elected representatives to be treated with kid gloves, particularly in opposition, but it now seems that the Scottish electorate are no longer represented in our democracy. This is very far from the respect and equal status that was promised in the 2014 referendum debate.
I am almost 65 years old and I have never been a fan of the arcane procedures and traditions of the House. The democratic deficit seems now to be getting worse and worse. Since the SNP have, quite legitimately, formed the majority of our MPs, their voice – and by extension the voice of those who chose them – has been treated with derision and contempt. The name of the party continues to be deliberately miss-called with sinister political (not humourous) intent.

Headlines about 'Nazi' slurs against the First Minister are better avoided

Those who simply glance at the newsstands may pick out these words without reading what the story is about
ONCE again we see top-class reporting from Kirsteen Paterson (Women’s Aid groups defunded), Greg Russell (Removal of immunity would be ‘cowardly’) and Laura Webster (Reform UK hopeful under fire for Twitter interactions) in Thursday’s National. Indeed having reporters of the quality of Ms Paterson and Ms Webster must be a massive plus for the newspaper, and I always look for their articles and reports.
I’ve taken the National from the first edition and constantly tell my friends and anyone else who will listen to at least try the paper, citing the political/social reporting of Ms Webster and Ms Paterson as leading female Scottish reporters.

Economist's lines on GERS and tax were straight from the Unionist lexicon

I REFER to the article by Kirsteen Paterson on the appointment of Mairi Spowage to interim director of the Fraser of Allander Institute in the spring (The Scots economist bucking the trend in the industry, December 20), which I thought might bring some fresh thinking to the political discourse. Unfortunately this does not appear to be the case given her reported comments on GERS and income tax, both of which come straight from the Unionist lexicon.
Firstly we have GERS, and are told “obsessive debate around it every year is not helpful”, which must mean do not question them, and then we are advised the statistics are “completely unbiased and statistically pure” despite being originally introduced by Ian Lang, former Conservative Secretary of State for Scotland, accompanied by the comments “just what is needed at present in our campaign to maintain the initiative and undermine the other parties”.
