Apology declined for no-show Tasman District councillor Mark Greening

MARTIN DE RUYTER/STUFF Mark Greening is one of four elected members in the Richmond Ward. Council records show he attended 23 of 53 council and committee meetings between November 2019 and last Thursday. An apology offered by absent councillor Mark Greening was declined at a committee meeting, an act Greening calls a storm in a teacup and a divisive political stunt. Associated with the reduced capital costs, there was also expected to be some operating cost savings as a result of the deferral. At the meeting, NRSBU activity engineer Iain Satterthwaite said the deferred projects included irrigation work at Best Island, ...

Drinking water supplies to rural areas may come with increased costs under a possible new law. Concerns have been raised over the cost and effectiveness of treating drinking water supplies in some rural areas under potential changes signalled in the Water Services Bill. Tasman District Council has outlined those concerns in a submission on the bill, which passed its first reading in December and is now before Parliament’s health select committee. “We believe some of the concerns that we raise in this submission will also be relevant to many other councils in New Zealand, especially tho...

Call to make nitrate management a priority on Waimea Plains - Vimarsana News

Call to make nitrate management a priority on Waimea Plains

Virginia Woolf/Stuff The level of nitrate in the waters under parts of the Waimea Plains has long been of concern. Agricultural and livestock land uses are the primary sources of nitrate contamination in the waters on and under the Waimea Plains, a new report has found. A summary of existing science from catchment management consultant Andrew Fenemor for the Tasman District Council said monthly groundwater data suggested that historic contamination from a piggery that closed in the 1980s has “likely passed and that the nitrate signature in these wells is caused by local and upstream intens...
