Congress has fielded Partha Pratim Banerjee for the Purulia seat after outgoing MLA Sudip Mukherjee left Congress and joined BJP.
Pradesh Congress leaders will have another round of talks with Left Front leaders on Sunday to sort out “teething problems” over seat-sharing in north Bengal. Congress is not in a mood to share seats with Abbas Siddiqui’s Indian Secular Front (ISF) in Malda and Murshidabad.

Thailand set to welcome back tourists in July | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Thailand is eyeing a July date to welcome back tourists after keeping its doors shut for over a year. The beach country that received 20 lakh visitors from India in 2019 and close to 3 lakh visitors in 2020 before the pandemic forced the country into a lockdown, earns nearly 20% of the GDP from tourism.
Thailand is slowly opening its gates for business but tourism is yet to flourish due to strict Covid protocols, with a compulsory 14-day quarantine and a minimum balance of Rs 5 lakhs in the bank over a period of six months before entering the country.
“We are in talks with the government to reduce the 14-day quarantine period and initiate vaccine passports where tourists with Covid vaccine will be given a priority. However, we are very strict in maintaining the safety protocols and thus negative tests and the new visa norms need to be followed,” said Vachirachai Sirisumpan, the director of Tourism Authority of Thailand in New Delhi.

Covid vaccination: More hospitals added, Kolkata jab sites double overnight from 25 to 50 | Kolkata News

KOLKATA: The number of Covid vaccination centres (CVC) in Kolkata doubled on Wednesday, a day after the Centre allowed more private hospitals to be a part of the immunisation programme. Till Tuesday, there were a total of 25 CVCs (10 private hospitals and 15 government vaccination centres) in the city; now, there are 25 more, with the state government including 17 private and eight government hospitals. The health department said even more would be added by the weekend.
The decision would come as a relief for senior citizens and those above 45 years old with comorbidities, the target group for this stage of the countrywide inoculation programme. Many of them had found out that the earliest available vaccination dates were only towards the end of the month. Several had complained of overcrowded CVCs and long waiting times.

Highest pre-poll deployment of central forces in Bengal | Kolkata News

Howrah locals shower flowers on central force personnel during route march
KOLKATA: Around 650 companies of central forces were likely to arrive in Bengal before March 25, sources said on Tuesday.
These will be in addition to the 125 companies that have already reached Bengal and another 169 scheduled to arrive this week. The total number of companies of central forces (944) that will be in Bengal ahead of the assembly polls, scheduled to begin on March 27, is much higher than that in 2016 assembly polls and 2019 Lok Sabha polls. This, sources said, would be the highest pre-election deployment of central forces in Bengal.
ADG (law and order) Jag Mohan, along with senior officers of BSF and CRPF, held a meeting with Bengal chief electoral officer (CEO) Aariz Aftab on Tuesday on force deployment and logistics. A major section of the central force is likely to be deployed in the areas where the polling is slated for March 27 and April 1. The first and second phases of elections in Bengal will cover West and East Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura and South 24 Parganas. Several of these zones fell in the Maoist hotbeds, which required additional force, sources said. Around 43 companies of central forces have been stationed in Maoist zones from earlier. These companies will not be used for poll-related duties.

EC removes ADG (law-order), Trinamool smells 'politics' | Kolkata News

Trinamool Congress seniors said they “smelt politics” behind the move but chose not to comment officially on the decision. Party MP Saugata Roy linked the transfer to a BJP complaint on “law and order in Bengal” lodged by party MP Swapan Dasgupta and Bengal leader Shishir Bajoria.
The EC also informed the state government that as many as 29 IAS officers and nine IPS officers would be sent to other poll-bound states as poll observers. They include several state secretaries and two ADGs.
Shamim, who was Kolkata Police special commissioner, was made ADG (law and order) on Februrary 6 to comply with an EC directive that said officials previously transferred by the EC could not be given “active poll duty” again.
