SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun on Thursday ordered a revamp of social distancing guidelines in a bid to win greater public support for efforts to stop local transmission of the new coronavirus.
The country’s five-tier social distancing system has faced a public backlash for imposing unfair restrictions and curfews on specific businesses, including a ban on indoor restaurant dining after 9 p.m.
“Rather than introduce the guidelines unilaterally, we should make the virus prevention rules along with the public,” Chung told an intra-agency meeting on Thursday.

South Korean PM arrives in Iran to help try to revive nuclear deal

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun arrived in Iran on Sunday to help try to restore a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and free up $7 billion in Iranian funds trapped in South Korea, Seoul officials said.

Chung is the first South Korean prime minister to visit Iran in 44 years amid icy relations between the two countries due to Iran’s military cooperation with North Korea.
Tension rose after Iran seized a South Korean ship and its sailors in the Strait of Hormuz in January, accusing them of polluting the waters, and demanded South Korea release $7 billion in assets frozen in South Korean banks under U.S. sanctions.

S. Korean PM departs for Iran amid tension over seized Tehran funds

ABCDEFG
SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun departed for Iran on Sunday for bilateral talks amid lingering tension over Tehran's call to unlock its funds frozen here under U.S. sanctions.
During his three-day visit that ends Tuesday, Chung is expected to discuss ways to enhance the Seoul-Tehran relations and other matters. The visit marks the first such trip by a South Korean premier in 44 years.
The visit came two days after the Iranian government released a Korean oil tanker and its captain who were detained over alleged oil pollution.
The detainment was widely seen as Teheran's retaliation against South Korea's seizure of some US$7 billion Iranian funds in early January, related to the U.S. nuclear sanctions on Iran.

TEHRAN, April 11 (Xinhua) -- South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun arrived here on Sunday for talks on a host of issues concerning bilateral ties, official IRNA news agency reported.
During his three-day stay in Tehran, Chung will meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and former Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani to discuss issues of mutual interest.
He will also meet with the representatives from South Korean companies in Iran, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, according to the report.
Among the topics for negotiations, there would be the issue of "illegal" restrictions on the Central Bank of Iran's access to its resources in the South Korean banks, Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said earlier.

South Korea dangles $8 billion in frozen Iranian oil money – Veterans Today | Military Foreign Affairs Policy Journal for Clandestine Services

[ Editor’s note: A behind the scenes move might be in the making, with South Korea considering to repatriate frozen Iranian oil payment funds, a tidy sum. The issue has been simmering for some time, with the snag being that S. Korea needed US Treasury OK to release the funds.
Has something changed? What could it be? Might Biden want to play a one step reduction in the Iran sanctions by not objecting to S. Korea’s releasing the funds to Iran? Such a fund would enable Iran to buy what it needs for coronavirus supplies and vaccines, and also the backlog of specialty medical supplies it has needed.
