Apartment complexes can sell treated water

The decision was taken after Bangalore’s Apartment Federation tabled the proposal to sell treated water sometime back. BAF, in its proposal, had highlighted that a good portion of treated wastewater is being let down the drain because the units generating them do not need so much water.

Speed up work on lake's sewage treatment plant

Interestingly, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in its order last year regarding damage to Chandapura Lake had rapped KSPCB for its inaction. Earlier, in an order dated October 10, 2022, the tribunal had directed the Karnataka government to pay a compensation of Rs 500 crore for not maintaining the lake.

BBMP, KSPCB swoop down on illegal plastic making unit

During a routine drive against banned plastic, BBMP marshals discovered a unit that was producing plastic bags with no permission from BBMP or KSPCB. It was raids on shops nearby using the banned single-use plastic that led them to the unit. A fine of Rs 50,000 has been imposed for plastic trading as per SWM 2016 rules.

Waters of concern: Surge in polluted lakes

The classification of the water quality of lakes in the city from January 2023 to December 2023 by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) shows that while there is a slight improvement in the percentage of water bodies with extreme water pollution levels, the situation is far from an improvement.

Pollution board finally sets sights on dirty sites

As per the CPCB’s list, the five contaminated sites in the city are Goripalya near Mysore Road, Mangammanapalya near Hosur Road, Peenya Industrial Area, Mavallipura dumpsite near Yelahanka, and Begur Lake. The list of probable contaminated sites includes Lalbagh Lake, Madiwala Lake, Hebbal Lake, Bellandur Lake, Kengeri Tank, Arekere Lake, Agara Lake, and Begur Lake.

21 complaints in 10 months; pop goes the plastic ban

According to data from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department, between July 2022 (since the ban was enforced) and October 2023, the Palike confiscated nearly 62,000 kg of the banned plastic through over 56,000 cases.

There's a twist in air purity levels

As per the data, while the concentration of particulate matter (PM) 10 has reduced considerably at five out of seven monitoring locations in the city in November this year compared to last year, PM 2.5 levels have also decreased at two out of five monitoring locations.
