For lasting peace

For lasting peace
May 17, 2021
It is said that a clever general in the face of a defeat declares victory and retreats. President Biden’s decision announced on April 14 to complete the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021 is actually an indirect admission of the failure of Washington’s Afghanistan policy.
American leaders and spokesmen are trying to convince the world that the US retreat from Afghanistan is taking place following the achievement of the objectives of its military invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. This assertion is far from the truth which is much more complicated.
Encouraged by the easy defeat of the Taliban government in 2001 following the US invasion of Afghanistan and swayed by the hubris of the neo-conservatives, the Bush administration embarked upon the task of nation-building in Afghanistan going far beyond the objective of defeating Al Qaeda. As announced by Bush in April, 2002, the original aims of the US invasion of Afghanistan were threefold: to defeat and dismantle Al Qaeda; to impose a government of Washington’s choice on the Afghan people in place of the Taliban government; and to rebuild Afghanistan with a stable government and as “a better place in which to live” according to American lights.

Pakistan's fault lines

Pakistan’s fault lines
April 11, 2021
Pakistan is a prime example of a country that has been deeply fractured by its widening national fault lines. These fault lines, which crisscross its politics, economy and society as a whole, have become the source of growing instability because Pakistan’s leaders have failed to bridge them through dialogue, negotiations and mutual accommodation.
Instead, the country has been virtually ripped apart socially, politically and economically by the rigidity and short-sightedness of its political leaders, the growing divide between the haves and the have-nots, the perennial civil-military tussle for power and domination, ethnic and linguistic divisions, and ideological differences rooted in the challenges of modernity and the varying religious beliefs and cultural traditions. These fault lines obviously offer attractive opportunities to Pakistan’s enemies, especially India, for the manipulation and destabilization of the country’s internal situation – thus, posing a serious threat to its security.

Middle East cauldron

Middle East cauldron
February 14, 2021
The Middle East has been deeply destabilized for decades thanks to its internal contradictions and external interference in its affairs. Since the end of World War II, the region has witnessed more regional conflicts than anywhere else in the world.
Developments over the past few years have once again raised political temperatures to dangerous levels, bringing the Middle East cauldron to the boiling point. The situation carries dangerous implications not only for the regional countries but also for their neighbours and the world at large. Pakistan, being on the periphery of the region, cannot remain unaffected if the events there take a turn for the worse. It must therefore take an active interest in supporting the moves for peace and stability in the Middle East, especially in the Persian Gulf region.
