Juneteenth Festival this Saturday celebrates freedom, new national holiday

Last year, things were different.
The situations involving individuals like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor made for a solemn and unsettled mood. Voices to be heard, things to be said. Somerset held a charette in observance of Juneteenth — a public gathering to work things out, discuss important issues, and work together for a solution.
But to everything there is a season. Last year's Juneteenth was a season for somber reflection. This year is a season for joy.
This Saturday, Somerset will play host to its first Juneteenth Festival, ushering in a new era both for the community and for America itself.

Diversity and inclusion: God's Will

I read a great article in the Saturday paper. It was about the forming of the Lake Cumberland Diversity Council. I thought it was inspiring, and it gave me cause to look into the word of God for affirmation the purpose and intent.
An epiphanic moment occurred during a moment of silence, in the pouring rain at the 2020 Juneteenth gathering. During the calm chaos of the moment, Pryor, one of the founders of the Council, said that it came to her that this is something a lot of people not only wanted but needed. Rikijah Pryor, along with Kathy Townsend and Jakaye Garth are the founding members.

In his 1963 commencement address at American University, the late President John F. Kennedy famously said, “If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.”
Here in Somerset — thanks to the tumultuous summer of 2020 — local people are working on making this community at least, if not the world itself, safer for its own diversity to flourish.

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march in downtown Somerset took participants from Davis Chapel AME church on Main Street around the Fountain Square and ultimately the the Citizens National Bank Pavilion on East Mt. Vernon Street.
Over 100 people took part in Monday’s MLK Day event, including the march and the gathering for Dr. King’s words at the Citizens National Bank Pavilion, where the Lake Cumberland Farm- ers’ Market is held.

“I am so happy that I didn’t sneeze.”
A well-populated crowd gathered inside the Citizens National Bank Pavilion in downtown Somerset on Monday, bundled up from chilly weather. Over their faces, almost every person wore a face mask with the coronavirus in mind — living in an era where a sneeze can seem a suspicious thing. And as they stood, they listened to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from April of 1968, the famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, in which King recalled battling an illness as a youth where a simple sneeze could have threatened his life, and a letter he received from a young admirer grateful that he did not succumb to a fatal sneeze.
