GUWAHATI: A sharp rise in Covid-19 positive cases in Assam, just a week ahead of counting day on May 2 for the recently concluded state assembly election, has posed a huge challenge for the state election commission.
Taking serious note of this, the state chief electoral officer (CEO) has prepared a protocol for counting day and is now waiting for the approval of the Election Commission of India, which is likely to come in a couple of days.

Unless foreigners tribunal declares a person as foreigner, his or her name will be there in the voter list even after exclusion from the NRC
According to NRC officials, 1,032 ineligible persons identified by it in last year's updated NRC are either ‘declared foreigners’, marked as ‘D voters’ or having cases pending at FTs (PTI)
Guwahati: In a significant move the election authorities in Assam has made it clear that 19 lakhs people, whose names were excluded from National Register of Citizens (NRC) but not facing any trial in the foreigners tribunal prior to publication of the final citizenship register on August 31, 2019 would be able to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming assembly polls in 2021.

GUWAHATI: NRC excludees, whose cases were not subjudice in the foreigners tribunals (FTs) prior to publication of the final citizenship register on August 31, 2019 and are free from the ‘D’ (doubtful) voter tag, will be able to vote in the 2021 Assam election, election authorities said.
Allegations have been levelled by the Opposition that the NRC state coordinator’s recent directive to deputy commissioners to reverify names that figured in the updated NRC published on August 31 last year is “unfair” after the rigorous NRC updating exercise. Even as the prolonged delay in sending rejection slips to the 19 lakh entries excluded from the updated NRC has been alleged as an injustice to many “Indian citizens” who are not being able to prove their citizenship, the NRC excludees would continue to enjoy their voting rights.
