The creation of a new volleyball federation is in the works as the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) scheduled the election of its officials on Jan. 25 at the East Ocean Seafoods Restaurant in Parañaque City. POC officials led by president Bambol Tolentino met with major volleyball stakeholders Saturday at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel to lay down the groundwork which will serve as a stepping stone in securing a recognition from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).

(LVPI) president Joey Romasanta is writing to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to seek clarification on the status of their association. The move came after the FIVB, in a letter signed by General Director Fabio Azevedo, requested the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to organize an election to the country’s volleyball governing body before the World Congress next month. “We want to know if this (election request) in effect withdraws the recognition of the LVPI from the FIVB,” Romasanta said. The FIVB has given provisional recognition to LVPI since 2015 after complying with their conditions and requirements that include payments amounting to $80,000 incurred by its predecessor, the Philippine Volleyball Federation.

POC President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said the POC will be hands-on in the electoral process that is set either in the third or fourth week of January. The FIVB, through its Director-General Fabio Azevedo, wrote Mr. Tolentino for the second time on Dec. 7 to reiterate the international federation’s desire for Philippine volleyball to hold elections. The FIVB first wrote the POC chief in August last year. “There was already a request from the FIVB some time ago to hold a volleyball election before the FIVB’s general assembly this February,” Mr. Tolentino said. “Without a legitimate NSA, we cannot send national teams to FIVB-sanctioned tournaments abroad.”
