event. and it's not a holiday so you don't have a lot of folks traveling to visit families. >> right now, it looks like we're having the first significant snowstorm of the season. >> we have thousands of plows and crew members, utility crews all standing at the ready to go where they need to be. well, at this hour, a live system that dropped a combination of heavy snow and rain in the northeast is continuing to move forth. at last check, that mix has fallen in pennsylvania, maryland, west virginia and virginia. the heaviest snow is expected in central and northern new york and throughout new england. those others could get 6 to 8 inches of snow. the national weather service has confirmed a tornado has touched down in south florida, the first one of the new year. you can see the twister swirling around in this video, in ft. lauderdale, it happened just before 6:00 p.m. local time. fire officials add that after it

much for your time. we appreciate it. >> thank you, jim. in the meantime, millions of americans in the northeast are digging out after the first big winter storm of the year. some spots like upstate new york seeing more than a foot of snow. the system sparking this tornado in ft. lauderdale. let me show you that. there it is right there. even as all of this, we should let you know, a bigger storm is right on the heels of that weather pattern we saw over the weekend. lisa rappa is tracking it all from the cnn weather center. this is a one, two punch. here comes the second one, i guess. >> yeah. not so much in the way of time to breathe in between these systems. that tornado you showed was an ef-0. we could have more as we go into the day tomorrow. we have an enhanced risk from new orleans to mobile to panama city. that's a level 3 out of 5. tornadoes could be strong and damaging wind gusts over 60 miles per hour. that's the warm part of the storm.
