Silent Spaces - Venues and spaces that have remained largely unused due to the pandemic feature in a new series of films in which performers and musicians take over the spaces. The series of films, called
Silent Spaces, is described as a “creative lockdown response driven by a pervading sense of Covid-induced personal and professional loneliness”. It has been created by musician and composer Soumik Datta and directed by his brother Souvid Datta.
Featuring a team of British Asian, black and ethnic minority musicians and dancers, the film-makers and performers create works in the British Museum, the Royal Albert Hall, Depot Mayfield in Manchester and Sage Gateshead, alongside Hawkwood College and London King’s Cross station. The six films explore “resonant themes in keeping with the choice of venue”, the producers said, and tackle issues around mental health, activism, the environment, colonisation and identity.

Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers
IT WAS quite a shock to read that former lead singer of the Bay City Rollers, Les McKeown, has died at the age of a mere 65 years.
A couple of friends and I use to run a busy mobile disco in the early 1970s and during that era the Bay City Rollers were a huge hit with the teeny-boppers.
They were one of the bands you could not dislike, even if their music was not quite to your own taste.

The 9 biggest moments of the 2021 Oscars

Associated Press
The nominees represented a huge advance in diversity, with more women and more actors of color nominated than ever before — but one oft-predicted outcome was not meant to be: a sweep of the acting categories by actors of color. Though supporting prizes went to Daniel Kaluuya ("Judas and the Black Messiah") and Youn Yuh-jung ("Minari"), the best actor and actress categories went unexpectedly to Anthony Hopkins and to Frances McDormand, winning her third trophy in the category, for "Nomadland."
But history was made nonetheless, especially by Chloé Zhao, the China-born director of "Nomadland" who became just the second woman to win best director, and the first woman of color.

City of Gary, Indiana, a setting in new 'Mortal Kombat' movie and Twitter is loving it

Joseph S. Pete
, 219-933-3316
GARY — Northwest Indiana residents have speared, uppercut, ripped the spines out of and performed countless fatalities in Mortal Kombat games at local arcades and home consoles for decades.
Now a Northwest Indiana city is an unlikely setting in the latest big-budget Hollywood movie adaption of the hyper-violent video game franchise. Gary – aka the Steel City, GI, the City of the Century – is one of the backdrops in the flick "Mortal Kombat" about the nefarious Outworld Emperor Shao Kahn seeking to invade the Earthrealm – a film in which mystical fighters shoot lasers from their eyes, teleport, breathe hellfire, create swords out of ice and stab an opponent with a dagger forged from their own frozen blood.

THE night of my 60th birthday in 2015 turned out to be a little bit special.
I celebrated this milestone by going to see The Bay City Rollers play live at Barrowland in Glasgow.
During the concert, I got the surprise of my life when I was inducted into the Barrowland Hall of Fame … becoming the first music journalist to receive such an accolade.
On stage – before the 1500-capacity, tartan clad audience – singer Les McKeown presented me with a handsome trophy.
Minutes later he was singing a song whose chorus went:
“Well we sang Shang-A-Lang/As we ran with the gang/Doin’ doo wop be dooby do ay.”

The convictions came after the Post Office installed the Horizon computer system in branches. The BBC says the system was “flawed”, leading to false allegations of fraud which in some cases resulted in conviction and imprisonment. Some postmasters say they have been shunned by their communities and are still struggling to secure new work.

Aw, no, Jim Steinman and Les McKeown gone in the same week! Steinman, 73, composer extraordinaire of Meat Loaf’s

of Hell, had deep roots in musical theatre and the dark blood of rock’n’roll bombast squirting through his veins. McKeown, 65, singer with 1970s phenomenon the Bay City Rollers, was the strutting, half-mast trousered tartan keeper of the true teen spirit.
