Hillcrest and Columbus Split Conference Contests

The Columbus Wildcat softball team scored their second straight win Wednesday, beating New London 7-1. The victory over the Tigers comes on the heels of a 5-2 win against Mount Pleasant over the weekend. Columbus jumped on the Tigers early, building a 6-0 lead with two runs in the first, one in the second, two more in the third and a single run in the sixth. New London got on the board with one in the bottom of the sixth, but Columbus tacked on another insurance run in their last at bat to finish the win. The first tournament of the year for the Columbus Community softball team resulted in a split on Saturday at Louisa-Muscatine. The Wildcats led Lisbon 2-0 for much of game one, but a late Lion rally resulted in an 8-3 loss. Columbus could muster up just four hits with Jobie Lekwa recording one of them and one RBI. Lily Coil tossed six innings in the circle giving up four earned runs on nine hits and striking out eight. Columbus Community was able to avoid inclement weather last night and still hold their mini track meet where three other schools made the trip. The Wildcat boys finished second out of four with 133 points and Wapello won it all with 146. The Hillcrest Academy and Columbus boys and girls track teams travel to Donnellson tonight for the Hawk Relays at Central Lee High School. Hillcrest last ran Monday at the Lion Relays at Lone Tree where they were led by Madelyn Fox’s championship in the 3000. The Raven boys saw Aaron Hershberger post two runner-up finishes, taking second in the 110 and 400 hurdles. The Columbus boys last ran at Lone Tree a week ago where they placed third with 101 points.
