Among the surest markers of success for a TV series is to offer an immersive, universally realistic experience for viewers. Delivering compelling characters and storylines are critical elements of this, but location ranks among the most essential means by which to build a centralized vibe or feel for a show. For generations, bars—whether considered penny universities, dives, upscale lounges, or clubs—have provided characters on television the space to laugh, cry, or simply get grounded.
To celebrate the legacy of famous fictional locales, Stacker took a look back at the past and picked 15 iconic TV bars. Selections come from a wide range of shows spanning genres and decades. These locations serve as ideal tools for character engagement and development, interesting scenarios, and alternate backdrops. Bars are a ripe setting for colorful background and secondary characters—not to mention the occasional outlandish situation.

Pablo Picasso was an unrivaled titan of 20th-century art. He influenced and collaborated with such fellow creative geniuses as Henri Matisse and Georges Braque, and the works of his Blue Period and his Rose Period are familiar to even the most casual museum-goer.
In politics, Picasso took an unwavering stand against fascism in his homeland. After a visit in 1934, he vowed not to return to Spain so long as the dictator General Francisco Franco was alive, and he never went home again. In joining the French Communist Party, he declared: "I have always been an exile, now I am one no longer; until the time when Spain may finally receive me, the French Communist Party has opened its arms to me."

Great documentaries often give access and illumination to stories that would otherwise go untold. The subject of a great documentary can be anything from a single individual's life to a broader political event, and the effect of the films can be anything from uplifting to devastating.
To celebrate the genre, Stacker created a ranking of the top 100 documentaries of all time by leveraging data on all documentary movies to create a "Stacker score" that serves as a weighted index split evenly between IMDb and Metacritic scores. To qualify, the film had to be listed as a documentary on IMDb, have a Metascore, and have at least 1,000 IMDb user votes. Ties were broken by Metascore and further ties were broken by votes. Documentary TV series were not included.
