TV 드라마 ⟪오로라 공주⟫와 ⟪톱스타 유백이⟫이 여주인공 말입니다. 굳이 이 책을 언급한 이유는 출판 배경 때문입니다. 그는 20대 시절 자정 무렵 일기를 쓰듯 마음을 덜어 글을 썼고 이번엔 그 글들을 모아 책을 냈습니다. 최근 에세이 경향처럼 짧지만 문장을 잘 다듬은, 시와 산문의 경계에 있는 글들이 소담하게 담겨 있습니다. 그의 고백처럼 마음에 가득 찬 어떤 것들을 글로 덜어내면 가벼워지고, 자신의 글을 통해 생각을 객관화하는 데 도움이 됩니다. 전 누구의 글이든 자주 쓰고 묵혀둔 글은 그만큼의 가치가 있다고 봅니다. 에세이의 강점은 무엇보다 접근이 쉽다는 것입니다. 논픽션(nonfiction) 장르 중 개인적 성격이 강한 산문집은 사실 모두 에세이입니다. 이기주 작가의 ⟪언어의 온도⟫, 김영하 작가의 ⟪여행의 이유⟫모두 소재와 이야기를 풀어가는 방식은 다르지만 그 본질은 에세이입니다. ⟪혼자가 혼자에게⟫처럼 말랑말랑한 작품부터 책에 대한 이야기로 관통한 ⟪메일 읽겠습니다⟫까지. 이렇게 읽을만한 논핀션은 대부분 에세이라는 것을 발견하게 됩니다. 특히 필력을 조금 닦으신 분들은 생의 사건을 나열한 형식이 아닌 생각을 조탁해 라는 이름으로 책을 냅니다. 이번에 새로 시작하는 학기는 길상호 시인의 에세이 수업 3기입니다. 3달이 넘는 시간 동안 수강생들의 변화를 지켜보았습니다. 처음엔 한 페이지를 넘기는 것을 어려워하셨던 분들이 이젠 글에서 헐렁한 부분을 덜어내고 문장과 단어를 검토하시는 것을 보게 됩니다. 일주일에 한 편씩 에세이 실습을 하는 것은 쉬운 일은 아니지만 즐거운 고통이랄까요. 혼자였으면 결코 하지 못했을 작품수업을 여럿이 함께 지도받으니 하게 됩니다. 살아가며 무언가를 자세히 들여다보고 생각을 끄집어내며 집중하는 과정을 통해 우린 조금 더 자랍니다. 모든 분을 환영합니다. 사람마다 다르겠지만, 퇴근 후 식구들이 잠든 밤이 글쓰기에 좋은 시간이다. 밤에 글을 쓰면 센티하게 된다는 이들도 있지만, 아무렴 어떤가. 일어나서 고치면 그만인 걸.ⓒpixabay 강사 길상호 2001년 《한국일보》 신춘문예 등단 시집 『오동나무 안에 잠들다』 『모르는 척』 『눈의 심장을 받았네』 『우리의 죄는 야옹』『오늘의 이야기는 끝이 났어요 내일 이야기는 내일 하기로 해요』 에세이 『한 사람을 건너왔다』 현대시동인상(2008), 천상병시상(2008), 김달진문학상 젊은시인상(2012), 제3회 김종삼 문학상(2019), 제8회 고양행주 문학상 수상(2019) ○ 개강:8월 5일(목) 오후 7시. 10주간. 매주 2시간 수업 ○ 수업방식:40분 이론수업, 1시간 20분 합평 (과제지도) ○ 수업장소:이산아카데미 경복궁역 서촌 강의실 (자하문로 17길 12-15) ○ 수업정원:8명
