In Florida, COVID-19 herd immunity is an insane policy

In Florida, COVID-19 herd immunity is an insane policy | Letters
Here’s what readers are saying in Sunday’s letters to the editor.

Is Florida a test site for herd immunity? |
Nov. 10
Herd immunity is similar to a technique used to control forest fires. Firefighters start a back burn. When the raging forest fire reaches the burned over forest, it peters out because there is nothing left to burn. This is all well and good, except: Would I be willing to have trees that I own sacrificed to protect a forest owned by others? Would I be willing to let my mother die so that strangers I do not know could be spared from being infected during a pandemic? It is one thing to think of sacrificing property for the greater good; it is another to consider sacrificing human lives. In the case of controlling a forest fire, the loss of a few trees to preserve many trees seems reasonable. When the same reasoning is applied to human lives, it seems cold, calculating and cynical. When a pandemic can be prevented by wearing masks and practicing social distancing, resorting to herd immunity is unconscionable.
