Racism: South Africa's ritual of hate and rage

South Africa’s political landscape is unique and complex, underpinned by a history of racial inequality and discrimination. The idealism of a ‘Rainbow Nation’ is held aloft whenever a politician needs to tug at the heartstrings of South Africans. The reality is far removed. The wrong word, uttered by the wrong person is quickly churned into a hate-filled froth by sensationalism on media platforms. Strip a single word of its context, magnify its connotations and you’ve got fuel for the South African ritual of the Two Weeks Hate. James Myburgh extends George Orwell’s description of the “Two Minutes Hate” in his book “1984”, to describe this phenomenon. The article was first published on Politicsweb. – Melani Nathan

Three DA heavyweights face off for Cape Town mayoralty

Card image cap

Nominations have now closed for the DA candidates hoping to stand as Cape Town mayor, with three high-profile names – Dan Plato, Bonginkosi Madikizela and Geordin Hill-Lewis – confirmed as being in contestation for the position.
This is one of the most sought-after positions within the party, because it is regarded as a safe seat. The smart money is still on the DA to comfortably take the Cape metro in the local government elections this year, so the candidate who emerges victorious from the DA’s internal selection process will almost certainly end up wearing the mayoral chain in Cape Town and wielding actual political power.

In February last year, Maggs stepped down as editor-in-chief at the broadcaster after occupying the post for 12 months.
"I've been stressed and unwell for some time and I've made this decision in my own best interests and that of the station," Maggs said in a joint statement with eMedia at the time.

Society has effectively been left for dead in part due to an interplay between bad politics and prevailing public discourse, write
Thembinkosi Gcoyi and

This year South Africans will once again have the opportunity to elect councillors of their choice in their respective localities when they cast votes in the August local elections.
Various political parties will, as always, be vying for the favours of the electorate seeking the mandate to implement their public policy agenda.
The local elections will take place against the backdrop of the havoc unleashed by Covid-19 on lives and livelihoods, which has exacerbated the negative economic growth recorded since the latter part of 2019, worsening poverty and unemployment, and a generally bleak outlook for the country.

The South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) has condemned the targeted abuse aimed at eNCA reporter Lindsay Dentlinger.
Dentlinger has apparently been the victim of death and rape threats after she was accused of racial bias over a week ago.
A video circulated on social media suggesting that Dentlinger has been racially selective when enforcing mask rules during her televised interviews.
Sanef's executive director Kate Skinner says the online abuse has been uncalled for.
Skinner says high-profile female journalists face ongoing abuse on social media platforms and at political events, rallies, and protest marches.

The SA National Editors' Forum (Sanef) on Sunday condemned the death and rape threats made against senior eNCA reporter Lindsay Dentlinger.
The forum said the abuse, which has mostly been on online platforms, was uncalled for.
“The abuse of journalists, particularly women journalists, is rife on social media platforms.
“But we have seen the same kind of abuse at political events, rallies and protests marches where women journalists have been pushed, sexually harassed and subjected to verbal abuse,” Sanef said in a statement.
