The poor performance by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the recent by-elections and its subsequent withdrawal from the upcoming Juja Constituency mini-poll has exposed the soft underbelly of the party associated with Deputy President William Ruto.
As UDA was trying to come to terms with the losses, its stalwart, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, announced he was temporarily disassociating with the Tangatanga wing of the Jubilee Party that is led by the DP.

Empower IEBC to tackle poll chaos

Despite many lapses in our electoral process, Kenyans have a reason to be proud that the country has always observed elections at regular intervals since independence. This is an important indicator of the democratic structure of our constitution.
This underscores the critical role of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as an autonomous institution in protecting the practice of democracy during the election of our country’s political leadership.

DPP asks police to investigate electoral malpractices, violence in by-elections

The DPP particularly highlighted Matungu Constituency, Kakamega County, and London Ward, Nakuru County, where incidents of violence were witnessed.

Jubilee, UDA share spoils in Nakuru vote

Wamaitha’s win in Naivasha’s Hell’s Gate race will give Jubilee some hope after she registered 3,863 votes against her closest rival  UDA’s Jonathan Warothe who got 2,766.
The just-concluded by-election would probably go down history has one that set the tone for the 2022 General Election as national politics took centre stage mini polls.
The loss for Jubilee to the little known political party that enjoys the backing of Deputy President William Ruto should worry the ruling party because it is an indication that it does not have full control of a region that voted for President Uhuru Kenyatta almost to a man - twice in 2017.

ODM Issues Statement After Losing to Mudavadi
Raila Odinga addresses ODM delegates and politicians in Nairobi on Thursday, October 8, 2020
ODM has issued a statement in regards to the by-elections that were conducted on Thursday, March 4, where the party congratulated the winners and raised concerns on issues it wants to be addressed.
ANC's Peter Nabulindo garnered 14,260 votes. ODM's David Were came second with 10,565 with UDA's Alex Lanya following with 5,513 votes.
"We congratulate all winners and celebrate our candidate in Matungu Constituency. Even though the result is not exactly what we had aimed for, coming a very strong second with close to 11,000 votes against 14,000 combined efforts for ANC, Ford-Kenya, KANU, and Wiper parties confirm that ODM remains the party to beat nationally.

By 9:30 pm, she had garnered 3,863 against her closest rival UDA’s Jonathan Warothe who got 2,766 as per reports from party agents.
But the Naivasha IEBC returning officer David Mbui said he was yet to receive official results from his presiding officers.
In London Ward, UDA’s Antony Nzuki took an early lead this evening, as vote tallying continued.

Don't vote for a party, vote for best candidate

By-elections will be held today in various parts of the country. There have been intense campaigns, most notably for Matungu and Kabuchai parliamentary seats in Kakamega and Bungoma counties respectively and in London Ward, Nakuru County.
Tensions and isolated cases of violence have also been reported during the campaigns. As they head to the polls today, voters and politicians must remember that this is not a matter of life and death.
Violence has no place in democratic elections. Police should be on alert and arrest any troublemakers.
Particularly, allegations by Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika that there are plans to cause chaos ahead of the London Ward by-election should be investigated and action taken, if necessary.

By-election: All systems go in fierce battle for two ward seats in Nakuru

Little-known party
Jubilee Party is keen on retaining the two seats after losing the Lake View ward by-election to a little-known party, The New Democrats, last year while United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which is allied to Deputy President William Ruto, is using this contest as a testing ground ahead of the 2022 elections.

To avoid another embarrassing defeat, Jubilee has marshalled its top leaders and some ODM members to join in the campaigns for the seats.
London and Hell’s Gate seats fell vacant following the deaths of Simon Mbugua and John Njuguna.

It's all systems go as voters in London and Hell’s Gate wards in Nakuru County head to the polls tomorrow to elect their MCAs in the by-elections.
Nakuru Town West Constituency returning officer Gilbert Serem and his Naivasha counterpart David Mbui said they have finalised training of clerks, presiding officers and their deputies who will be involved in the exercise.
“We have also met the candidates and their agents. We are ready for the by-elections,” Serem said.

Two candidates pulled out of the London Ward by-elections in Nakuru in favour of the Jubilee Party aspirant on the last day of campaigns.
Kanu was the second party to throw its weight behind the Jubilee candidate yesterday, two days after ODM made a similar move.
In a statement to newsrooms, Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat (

Chaos as police lobby tear gas to disperse UDA meeting in Nakuru

Police in Nakuru tear-gassed lawmakers allied to Deputy President William Ruto to stop a campaign meeting for a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party candidate for London by-election.
Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika,  Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri, his Nyali counterpart Mohammed Ali, Dagoretti North’s John Kiarie, Cecilly Mbarire (Nominated) were caught in the chaos as the riot police dispersed supporters.
The participants had started gathering at the party office in Nakuru’s Milimani estate.
Antony Nzuki, the UDA candidate, had organised the meeting when the police arrived and barricade the entrance to the office with stones and kept away anyone trying to enter the premises.

Pandemic leaves its mark on London city councillors' expenses

Refunded tickets and office supplies dominated city councillors’ expense accounts last year, the mark of a pandemic-plagued year that included a widespread shift to at-home work, even for some elected officials.
Two councillors spent just hundreds of the $15,000 available to each politician in a general expense account, and many more were issued refunds for conferences, community events and other plans that went by the wayside as COVID-19 walloped the country.

"I want to tell the people of Matungu that I'm coming back to complete the work that I had started, and also to complete Murunga's work," said Were.
"And I want to assure them that we will be peaceful; we will not be abusive. In fact, we will be begging."
Were counts on his experience as a former Member of Parliament to pick from where Murunga left.

IEBC set to vet 30 for two ward polls

At least names of 30 aspirants have been forwarded to the electoral agency for vetting ahead of two ward by-elections in Nakuru County slated for March 4, 2021.
The seats fell vacant following the deaths of Samuel Mbugua of London Ward and Hell’s Gate’s John Njenga in November.
Last week Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) directed political parties interested in fielding candidates to send names of aspirants by Monday. But Jubilee Party Secretary General Nakuru branch Peter Cheruiyot said they sought an extension.
"We have engaged the IEBC to have more time for more aspirants who had not managed to obtain critical documents by today. They have until Wednesday to provide the party with the documents," said Cheruiyot on Tuesday.
