New coronavirus cases and Covid-19 deaths have been declining for 19 consecutive weeks, a senior health official said Sunday, but four states recorded an increase in infections in the first two weeks of May compared to the previous fortnight.
Health Ministry Director of Epidemiology José Luis Alomía said the sustained decrease in cases and deaths was good news but warned citizens not to become complacent and to continue following virus mitigation measures such as social distancing and wearing a face mask.

While Mexico’s death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has risen to more than 192,000, the government undersecretary responsible for the country’s response to the crisis decided to take a stroll through one of the capital’s fashionable neighborhoods, despite having tested positive for COVID-19 himself.
In images shared on social media, Hugo López-Gatell, head of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Secretariat of Health and spokesperson for the government’s coronavirus task force, was photographed in a popular park in Colonia Condesa without a face mask in what could have been put down to just another memory lapse on the part of a government official – several, including President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have been spotted breaking health regulations – had it not been for the fact that López-Gatell laid down the coronavirus laws himself. Furthermore, López-Gatell had confirmed in a press conference the same day that he was still contagious.

The EU calls for dialogue in Venezuela and considers Guaidó a “privileged interlocutor”
The European Union (EU) reiterated on Monday that the “only way out” of the crisis in Venezuela is to resume political negotiations and to establish a transition process leading to “fair elections”, stressing the bloc sees the opposition’s Juan Guaidó as a “key player” in this process.
In addition, Brussels demanded that the Venezuelan government guarantees “freedom and security” for opposition leaders, and threatened to apply more economic sanctions to Caracas.
The foreign ministers of the 27 EU countries avoided mentioning the status of Guaidó in this crisis, as he self proclaimed president-in-charge two years ago by an opposition-dominated National Assembly . However, European officials assured that he, as well as the rest of the deputies of the outgoing National Assembly are “important actors and privileged interlocutors as well” in the political process.

A shipment of about 200,000 doses of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine will arrive in Mexico next week, a senior health official said Tuesday.
But it is not yet known when the doses may be administered because Cofepris, Mexico’s health regulator, has not authorized the Russian vaccine.
Juan Ferrer, head of the government’s universal health care scheme, announced the forthcoming arrival of the first of many shipments of the two-shot Sputnik V, telling reporters at a press conference Tuesday morning that the purchase “opens up new hope” for Mexico.
