LISBON: Luis Filipe Vieira
(pix), who suspended his duties as president of Benfica last week after being detained as part of an investigation into alleged tax fraud and money laundering, has resigned, the Portuguese club said in a statement.
Vieira, who ran the club for 18 years, said in a letter to the chairman of the board that he was no longer in a position to carry out his duties after his arrest.
“The directors of... Benfica appeal for (fans) to unite around their common objectives and the safeguarding of the higher interests of the club,” Benfica said in a statement on their website, adding the board would meet on Friday to finalise the leadership changes.

Benfica president Vieira arrested - reports

Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has been arrested for alleged fraud local media reported on Wednesday.
According to reports, Vieira’s home, office as well as the Novo Banco bank were searched as part of an investigation into possible financial irregularities.
Portuguese legal authorities said four people had been taken in for questioning as part of a probe into fraud.
Portugal’s Public Prosecution Service said in a statement that they were investigating “deals and financings totalling more than 100 million euros (118 million dollars), which may have resulted in heavy losses for the state and some of the companies”.
The investigation reportedly stretches back to 2014 and possible offences include “breach of trust, aggravated fraud, forgery, tax fraud and money laundering,” it added.

Benfica president arrested in Portugal

Luis Filipe Vieira, the president of Portuguese football club Benfica, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of tax fraud and money laundering.
According to Portugal’s Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action, “businesses and financing in a total amount exceeding 100 million euros (118 million U.S. dollars), which may have caused considerable damage to the State” are being investigated.
The Portuguese Public Prosecutor’s Office added that “crimes of breach of trust, qualified fraud, forgery, tax fraud and [money] laundering are investigated.”
Police investigators say that “around 45 search warrants were carried out, covering corporate premises, homes, lawyers’ offices and a banking institution” in the capital Lisbon, and the cities of Torres Vedras and Braga, in northern Portugal.
