On Monday, Detective Sergeant Simon Jeffries told the court he arrived at a Papatoetoe residential address where Niumagumagu had already been located and arrested for assault. The defendant was advised of his rights before they travelled to Manukau Police Station. Jeffries told the defendant a woman had died and two people were in a serious condition in hospital after the incident. “I didn’t mean to do this,” Niumagumagu allegedly said, emotional. Niumagumagu allegedly asked the police officer if his ex-wife was alright, and called her a bitch.

On Thursday, Abdul Riyaz told the court he was leaving Oji Fibre Solutions when he heard a lady screaming and ran. He saw Niumagumagu holding Matamua who had blood on her face and neck, Riyaz said. “He had a large metal screwdriver type object ... he looked angry.” Riyaz told Radich he ran back to the factory to get a first aider and grabbed a blanket. “It was cold at that time and the lady was shivering.”
