Proposed Costco, apartments moved forward by the Stuart City Commission

The lengthy meeting consisted of presentations by the developer and byLinda Kay Richards, who gave a formal presentation in opposition, in addition to multiple questions by commissioners and more than 30 people speaking during public comment.
Most who spoke in favor of Costco Wholesale Corp. but against the proposed location, citing negative impacts on surrounding residential communities and an increase in traffic.
“I love Costco. I have a card; I’ve been going there since 2007,” Martin County resident Amy Pritchett said. “I just don’t like the location. . Put it in a place where there isn’t as much going on.” ....

The project would generate 7,410 traffic trips daily, according to the proposal.
Another likely point of controversy will be a road proposed through the center of the project, connecting Kanner Highway to Willoughby Boulevard, according to site plans.
Costco officials declined to comment on the proposed Stuart store or Thursday s presentation.
The project is to come to the City Commission following Local Planning Agency action, and needs commission approval. The commission would take up the proposal no sooner than its May 24 meeting.
Thursday s meeting is 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 121 SW Flagler Ave.

A years-long battle over a major wholesale store coming to the Treasure Coast will take center stage on Thursday.
The Local Planning Agency for the city of Stuart will meet at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the next steps in potentially welcoming a Costco store to the city with a gas station, residential apartment units, retail, and restaurants on a 49-acre property.
The LPA will consider recommending the project to the city commission to consider in late May.
The project would be located along Kanner Highway, south of Martin County High School, abutting the Lychee Tree Nursery. This is Costco’s second attempt to build at the location. Costco also years ago proposed construction in Palm City near Florida s Turnpike. ....
