40th annual Fishing Derby is largest ever

The Sleepy Eye Sportsmen's Club's 40th annual Fishing Derby on Sunday, Feb. 6 was a record breaker with 1,022 people registered for fishing.

The fun on Sleepy Eye Lake will continue with the annual Fishing Derby sponsored by the Sportsmen's Club on Sunday, Feb. 6 from noon to 3 p.m.

It was different and it was the same. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, the 39th Annual Fishing Derby on Sleepy Eye Lake looked a lot like it has every year. The Sportsmen’s Club had to limit registered fishers to 250, but others were also able to fish on the lake Sunday, Feb. 7. The array of fishing shelters on the lake compared favorably to past years and the frigid weather kept people in their shelters, rather than gathering together outside. A win-win for the club as they adapted to the guidelines requiring social distancing.
“It all went well,” said Lynn Krenz, of the fishing derby committee. “Everyone was good about following the rules. We sold out of the big raffle tickets in the days before the fishing derby and sold lots of tickets for the smaller raffles also. We will do fine financially.”

The COVID-19 pandemic loomed over whether a fishing contest could be held this winter, but now plans are settled for the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club 39th Annual Fishing Derby on Sleepy Eye Lake Sunday, Feb. 7. The Minnesota DNR recently informed the club that the contest was a go—with a Covid Preparedness Plan required.
Club member Lynn Krenz said they want to stress to everyone who plans to come to the lake for the fishing contest, that the Covid regulations adopted must be followed. These are what we’ve all come to understand—wear a mask and maintain social distance from those not in your household.
