Plastic waste disposal still a challenge in coastal CDO villages

CLEANUP DRIVE. Volunteers of the Couples for Christ-Misamis Oriental pick up garbage along a Cagayan de Oro City coastline on Saturday (Sept. 17, 2022). Officials of Barangay Bonbon said most of the trash collected were plastic materials. (Courtesy of CFC-MisOr) CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - There are still a lot to be done to reduce plastic wastes along shorelines and in coastal communities here. Based on the post-cleanup assessment of Barangay Bonbon chair Allan Mabalacad after the annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day that involved 13 villages over the weekend, there must be firm measures to minimize the accumulation of plastic waste. "The village has (a significant number of) commercial beach area, maybe the reason why they got more plastic bottle trash in the area," he said in an interview. Maria Judelyn Pueblos, one of the cleanup volunteers, said most of the retrieved trash were plastic bottles and wrappers. The Cagayan de Oro City cleanup kicked off in Barangay Lapasan on Friday and was also participated in by coastal villages in Lapasan, Agusan, Bayabas, Bulua, Bugo, Cugman, Gusa, Macabalan, Puntod, Puerto, and Tablon. The ICC Day aims to engage people around the world to remove trash and debris from beaches, waterways, and other water bodies. It is celebrated every third Saturday of September as per Proclamation No. 470, series of 2003. Environmentalists said the top five most commonly collected items during ICC days are cigarette butts, plastic beverage bottles, food wrappers, plastic bottle caps, and plastic straws. "All are forms of plastic debris. The very qualities that make plastic an adaptable and durable product to use, also make it an environmental nightmare. Plastics do not biodegrade. Instead, they break down with exposure to weather and the sun's ultraviolet rays into smaller and smaller pieces. When these pieces infiltrate the environment, especially marine environments, they wreak havoc on wildlife and the ecosystem," according to a statement of international group Surfrider Foundation. Although the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Northern Mindanao has yet to submit data on the total volume of waste retrieved, volunteers and village officials said most of the trash collected were plastic materials. Proclamation No. 244 in 1993 likewise designated the month of September every year as the National Cleanup Month and the 17th to the 23rd of the month yearly as the World Clean and Green Week. The events aim to mobilize a massive voluntary action to support and complement the country's cleanup and environmental greening activities wherein garbage reduction, recycling, and composting, and the rehabilitation of waterways will be institutionalized by various sectors of society. Massive formal and non-formal education on garbage management, pollution control, and the training of trainors, teachers, and youth leaders will be intensified each September, the order read. CDO LGU reminds public of health protocols amid new Omicron cases

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The city health office (CHO) here has urged the public anew to strictly adhere to minimum public health standards against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) despite the alert status in the city being downgraded to Level 1. In an online briefer on Wednesday, CHO medical officer Dr. Ted Yu Jr. made the call after he reported the fifth batch of Omicron variant cases in the city. The CHO data showed that the new batch of Omicron cases here is comprised of seven males and seven females, respectively, from the villages of Lumbia, Balulang, Carmen, and Canitoan with two each; and also one each from Barangays Macabalan, Iponan, Bonbon, Bulua, Bugo, and Patag. Two of the 14 cases have died, of which one was unvaccinated, Yu said. Yu clarified that the newly-confirmed Omicron cases were from different households. The CHO has coordinated with the respective Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERTS) of the concerned villages for an intensive monitoring against acute respiratory infection and influenza-like illnesses among the recorded close contacts. "(On Tuesday), we started our ongoing contact tracing even though they are already certified as recovered for three weeks. But still, we need to continue the contact tracing," Yu said. Yu said they have recorded 53 close contacts of the new 14 Omicron cases. He said specimens from the new batch were collected for genome testing from January 31 to February 4 this year and the results were released on March 6. Overall, the city has recorded 61 Omicron variant cases, of which 55 are city residents, while the rest are re-tagged. On the other hand, the CHO announced in the same online briefer that the number of Covid-19 active cases here has remained at double digits despite the city government tallying 11 new detected cases, bringing the total cumulative cases to 25,723. Of the total active cases, 51 are currently admitted to different hospitals in the city while 46 are outpatients. Yu also reported 31 new recoveries, bringing the total recoveries to 24,694, and two new deaths, bringing the total deaths to 932. "We should not forget the minimum public health standards and avoid 3Cs [closed, crowded and close-contact]. We should defend ourselves from the virus," he said. Yu also encouraged individuals, especially those unvaccinated, to get inoculated with the Covid-19 vaccines for further protection against the virus. As of March 8, the city has recorded 541,486 fully vaccinated individuals representing 90.25 percent of the total target population of 599,929. Of the fully vaccinated population, 19.48 percent or 105,524 have received booster shots, while 33,386 have received their first dose of the vaccine. Meanwhile, the local government resumed Wednesday the 5 to 11 age group vaccination, where they immunized a total of 673 children for the first dose and 575 children for the second dose. Overall, the city has recorded 6,948 inoculated children under the particular pediatric group, 575 of whom have been fully vaccinated. (PNA) }

CDO monitors 121 'Omicron' close contacts

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The City Health Office (CHO) here has intensified the monitoring of the first-generation close contacts of the second batch of people infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus disease 2019. In an online briefer Thursday, CHO medical officer Dr. Ted Yu Jr. said they have identified 121 first-generation close contacts of the recently reported 32 Omicron cases in the city. Yu said none of the close contacts, as of the moment, are experiencing Acute Respiratory Illnesses (ARI) or Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI). Mayor Oscar Moreno stressed the need for intensive monitoring of close contacts even if it has been more than a month since they got infected. "It's been a month already but nonetheless we should continue (the monitoring). The best thing of our contact tracing, validation, and assessment will actually serve as good reference material for the report to Philippine Genome Center when it comes to the variants," Moreno said. On Tuesday, the city government reported the 32 new detected Omicron cases that included 31 local cases and one returning overseas Filipino (ROF). According to Yu's previous report, five of the cases were from Balulang village; three cases each from the villages of Kauswagan, Nazareth, Iponan, and Cugman; and two cases each from the villages of Patag, Carmen, Macabalan, and Gusa. Also, the villages of San Simon, Puntod, Bulua Macasandig, Bugo, Lapasan and Indahag had one case each of the variant. The 18 first-generation closed contacts of the first seven Omicron variant tested positive for Covid-19 but with the said variant. The CHO has so far tallied 39 Omicron cases. Meanwhile, the city has detected 44 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total active cases to 1,974 and the total cumulative cases to 25,366. The total recoveries from the virus have reached 22,480 after the CHO reported 165 new recoveries. They also reported one new death, bringing the total to 915. (PNA) }
