PNP to community pantry organizers: We mean no harm

Published May 20, 2021, 10:42 AM
The apology of the head of the police’s Human Rights Affairs Office to community pantry organizers is a proof that the Philippine National Police (PNP) has no policy of harassing them amid allegations of police intimidation before that prompted some of them to stop their operation.
PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar reiterated that the organization has never sanctioned a profiling of community pantry organizers who have been selflessly offering help to those in need and fostering the Bayanihan spirit.
The Chief of the PNP-HRAO, Police Brig. Gen. Vincent Calanoga, said in a congressional hearing last Wednesday that the allegations on police profiling are already under investigation and being acted upon. He later apologized to the community pantry organizers who felt threatened or intimidated by the actions of some police officers.

A resolution commending Maginhawa community pantry organizer Ana Patricia Non and volunteers of thousands of similar initiative all over the country for igniting the bayanihan spirit of Filipinos amid the COVID-19 pandemic was filed in the Senate Monday.
Under Senate Resolution 714 filed by Senator Grade Poe, the spirited moment of selflessness amid the pandemic must be encouraged and aided by the government to ensure the implementation of health and safety protocols instead of closing it down or subjecting it to red-tagging.
It added the more than 6,700 community pantries now in existence across the country show that one’s act of generosity can spark a movement and set in motion a phenomenon of giving and sharing

Press Release - WIN TRANSCRIPT | ANC Matters of Fact Interview of Sen. Win Gatchalian withChristian Esguerra on defunding NTF-ELCAC

April 26, 2021
ANC @ANC Matters of Fact Interview of Sen. Win Gatchalian with Christian Esguerra on defunding NTF-ELCAC
Q: I'm curious about your reaction when you heard that statement coming from Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade, Jr., a man in uniform, calling the criticism coming from certain senators, including yourself, of the red baiting of community pantries, basically, he used the term stupid.
SEN WIN: That's very disappointing, Christian considering that we both work for the same government, we both work for the same people, and we both want the best for our country. And just because we have a difference of opinion, we will start degrading one another. The problem is Parlade. That's why all of these things are now becoming a hot topic. The community pantries is an inspiration to many, especially to ordinary Filipinos. Even here in Valenzuela, in our city, we now have about 30 community pantries, all launched by ordinary Filipinos, and none of them, which a lot of them are personal friends of mine, none of them are connected with any, NPA or any terrorist. So in other words, the name calling and the red tagging of community pantries is uncalled for. Now is not the time to divide the country.
