Eight years and still no police station for Makhaza By Siyabonga Kalipa Share Cape Town - Residents in two communities are no closer to getting state-of-the-art police precincts as promised nearly a decade ago. In 2013, Makhaza was promised its own station, while Muizenberg was set to be revamped as a cost of over R107 million. There was a massive outcry slamming authorities for the money to be spent at Muizenberg that presented less crime than areas like Makhaza and Khayelitsha. Yesterday Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the fourth quarter crime stats where Khayelitsha came up as the province’s murder capital. In the list of the top 30 police stations for murder Khayelitsha was fourth nationally, with 57 murders compared to 47 from the same period last year.
To ensure the safety of the community members of Public Order Policing conducted a stop and search operation in Makhaza, Harare last night, which resulted in a 30-year-old suspect being arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. During the early hours of this morning, members of the Provincial Integrated Team conducted a similar stop and search operation, also in Harare when another 30-year-old suspect was arrested at a local tavern in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and ammunition. Both suspects are expected to make their court appearances in Khayelitsha once they have been charged.

Residents allegedly stoned the men to death in 41 Block, Makhaza, on Tuesday. They were accused of breaking into houses and stealing items. Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said the residents allegedly assaulted five people. Two died and three were admitted to hospital with serious injuries. Our efforts to ensure the safety of our community have landed a 21-year-old suspect behind bars for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition last night at about 23:45. Members of the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit were busy with patrols when the suspect saw the marked police vehicle and started running. The members gave chase and apprehended the suspect in St Bernard Crescent, St Montague Village, Lavender Hill. He was searched and found in possession of a silver star firearm and eight rounds of ammunition. Once charged the suspect will appear in Wynberg Magistrate’s court. In an unrelated matter, Harare SAPS members have arrested three suspects who were allegedly involved in the brutal killing of two victims and the attempted murder of three. Yesterday, 13 April 2021 at about 14:30, police attended a scene in 41 Block Makhaza where two victims were stoned to death allegedly by the community members. They were allegedly accused of breaking into the houses and stealing other people’s items. The members of the community got hold of the five and allegedly assaulted them of which two died due to injuries sustained and three were admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
