“This child did not understand what was happening,” said Krissi Mokgadi, Jevano’s aunt.
“A group of friends came over to fetch him; the next thing I received a phone call from his cousin saying that Jevano had been shot.”
“We don’t know what happened, but all we know is that he was shot. We want answers to explain how our child was killed. But we don’t know where we will get them.”
Jevano died on the scene after a security guard at a warehouse that was barricaded by protesting residents allegedly fired a “warning shot” to scare off the crowd.

Mangaung protests: 70 arrested for public violence and looting of foreign-owned shops

Since the protests in Mangaung in the Free State erupted on Sunday, 70 people have been arrested.
According to police, foreign owned shops and incidents of public violence have been reported.
News24 also reported that a teenager was killed.
Seventy people have been arrested so far in connection with the protests in the Free State that saw the looting of shops and the death of a teenager.
The protests, which started on Sunday evening in an apparent attempt to shutdown Mangaung, resulted in dozens of incidents of alleged public violence, theft, vehicle hijackings and business robberies.

Mangaung protest called off after agreement reached

By late on Tuesday evening, one of the Mangaung Community Concern (MCC) leaders, Lilly Tsoeu, told News24 an agreement had been reached.
Protesters used burning tyres, stones and debris to block several roads, while several businesses were looted.
Free State Premier Sefora Ntombela said the meeting had deliberated on the key concerns raised by the various stakeholders, including the lack of service delivery.
The protest in the Free State, which saw 19 people arrested, has been suspended after the Mangaung Community Concern (MCC) leadership and Premier Sefora Ntombela reached an agreement.
It will bind all stakeholders, outline all areas of concern and timeframes for implementation as well as monitoring.

MANGAUNG - A security guard accused of shooting dead 14-year-old Jevano Siegel during the Mangaung protests on Monday, has been granted bail of R1,000.
The guard is being charged with culpable homicide and the matter has been postponed to 9 June.
A total of 35 community members accused of public violence, robbery, and arson were also in court on Wednesday.
That case has been postponed to Friday for formal bail applications.

The Mangaung Shutdown protest has officially been called off after the Premier of the Free State Sefora Ntombela and the provincial Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) met with protest leaders in an emergency meeting on Tuesday afternoon, 17 May.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said, on Wednesday, that 70 people have been arrested since the protests broke out on Sunday and they expect more to follow.

'My baby is not kicking': medics unable to reach patient as protests sweep across Bloemfontein

Provincial health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi confirmed that paramedics could not get to the 21-year-old patient due to road closures.
“She started experiencing pains yesterday and she needed EMS attention but EMS couldn’t go to her because the roads are closed and there were cars that were burnt. Emergency services have been trying to get police to escort them to get to her.”
Nqwazana said, “[My sister] is crying because she doesn’t feel pains and the baby is not kicking and it is just quiet.
“There is no way we can reach a hospital because we tried using a car and we tried the police, but they are afraid they [protesters] are going to break their vans. We don’t know what to do.”

The Free State co-operative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) department said on Tuesday that the shutdown in Mangaung had been called off after a “fruitful” meeting.
Cogta spokesperson Zolile Lobe confirmed that premier Sisi Ntombela and Cogta MEC Thembeni Nxangisa had a meeting on Tuesday afternoon with the members of the Mangaung Concerned Committee.
“The meeting deliberated on matters that are of concern to the community members, and we appreciate that the community has genuine concerns,” Lobe said.
