Nature and science tells us that we can do it. this is the first big climate conference since the trump administration formally began the process of withdrawing from the 2015 paris climate accord. house speaker nancy pelosi, who is leading a group of congressmembers, separate from the u.s. delegation says the u.s. is still in the fight against climate change. we are here to say to all of you, on behalf of the house of representatives in the congress of the united states, we re still in it. we re still in it. joining us now to talk about this is michael mann. distinguished professor of atmospheric science at penn state university. author of the madhouse effect. michael, i thought that the u.n. secretary general was understating the case when he says the point of no return is no longer over the horizon. it s hurdling toward us. the report from the u.n. says that greenhouse gas emissions rose 1.5% each year over the ....

We need to bring those down precipitously now. as you say, more than 7% a year for the next decade. so there is great urgency but there is also, as you heard, some agency here. we still have time to avert the worst impacts of climate change if we act now. so when you when we talk about the urgency and the degree to which we have to do this, u.s. leadership is not only required. but we re really talking about an industry that is important in the u.s. we re talking about fossil fuels, right? for all the things that you can do about climate and we should do and that we have to do. it it is it s exciting to the fossil fuel industry when they hear us talking about paper straws and things like that because it takes the pressure off the idea that in order to cut 7.6% each year, if you believe that to be true in terms of emissions, we ve got to change our behavior with respect, our relationship to oil, our relationship to coal, and our relationship to natural gas. yeah. thanks, ali. ....

Past decade and global temperatures could rise 3.9 degrees celsius or 7 degrees fahrenheit by 2100. this is above preindustrial levels. which means we ve got to cut emissions 7.6% each year between 2020, next year, and 2030. 7.6% each year and we re going in the opposite direction. ali, thanks. that s exactly right. we have seen dash we had seen carbon emissions plateau. that s a good sign. for several years. and then donald trump threatened to pull out of the paris accord. that sort of took the pressure off of other international actors. china began building new coal-fired power plants and we ve seen them tick up again now because of that. as you note, we don t have much time left. if we are to avert what just about any scientist studying the impacts of climate change will tell you would be catastrophic warming of the planet. a gldegree and a half celsius. it s about 3 degrees fahrenheit. ....
