Child care, a critical service for families, remains inaccessible for many across the U.S.

For many American families, child care is a necessity, as children make up 22% of the U.S. population. But the cost can be prohibitively expensive, forcing some parents to choose between paying for child care or quitting their jobs. We sit down with local and national experts to look at the impact of child care on everything from gender roles to the national economy.

The majority of Los Angeles Unified School District students will still be learning from home when classrooms begin to reopen this week — but if your kids are among those headed back to campus, chances are they’ll spend more hours in day care than with their teacher.

For more than 70% of returning elementary schoolers, those hours will probably stretch from the end of in-person instruction at 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., though for some it may be from 8 a.m. until after lunch. And for 64% of middle schoolers, it could be several full days a week, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

When LAUSD reopens schools, K-8 students will spend more time in child care than class

When Los Angeles Unified elementary and middle-school students return to school, most will spend the majority of their time in extended child care, not in class. That is raising questions about the district's ability to deliver care.

Thousands Of California Child Care Providers Have Closed. A New Child Care Union Aims To Save The Rest

Ordinarily, a newly-formed union would start by negotiating a contract that outlines working conditions. But with the pandemic surging, the first priority for Child Care Providers United is emergency relief for providers.
"Under normal circumstances ... at this stage, we'd be having discussions around language to start creating a skeleton of a contract," said union Chair Max Arias. "But we're in COVID-19 times. We're in the middle of providers closing at an alarming rate."
Between March and November, 2,030 licensed child care homes in California permanently closed — 4,400 temporarily shut their doors.
The union's members care for children through California's subsidy programs for low-income families. Since the pandemic broke out, that care has been extended to some essential workers.

Womens Magazine - December 14, 2020 - Please support Women's Magazine this Monday

This Monday December 14th on KPFA Radio’s  “Women’s Magazine” we look at how racial Capitalism and Patriarchy have created a punitive underfunded child care system in the U.S. where the
the average hourly wage of child care workers is $10.72 per hour,  many of the women in need of child care are black and brown women and few get any government support in accessing child care.  This system
is informed by the history of slavery in the U.S. where women’s job to reproduce the work force is required but never supported.  And the reality in our neoliberal economy is that many women especially women of color are the essential workers during covid and are working 2-3 jobs just to survive and yet rarely getting any government support for child care.
