ROME — Milva, whose charisma, warm voice and flaming red hair made her one of Italy’s most recognizable divas from the 1960s through the ’80s, died on April 23 at a hospital in Milan. She was 81.

The later singer was often referred to as “La Rossa,” which means “redhead” in Italian, for the color of her fiery red locks.
Milva’s career spanned decades and was considered a musical treasure in her home country. The late singer’s fame was not limited to Italy. She released several foreign language songs such as English, German, French, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese, and Japanese, which contributed to her success around the world.

Italian singer Milva has died, her daughter told the Italian news agency Ansa on Saturday.
"La Rossa," as Maria Ilva Biolcati was also known in Italy because of her red hair, died on Friday (April 23) in Milan at the age of 81.
"Milva was one of the strongest interpreters of Italian chanson," Italy's Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said on Saturday.

'Indominable': Milva, beloved Italian singer, dies at 81


ROME (AP) — Milva, one of Italy’s most popular singers in the ’60s and ’70s who was also beloved by many fans abroad, died Saturday at her home in Milan. She was 81.
In announcing her death, Italy’s Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said Milva’s versatile voice “stirred deep emotions in entire generations.” No cause of death was given.
Milva also starred as a stage actress, with a repertoire heavily based on the works of German playwright Bertolt Brecht. She often worked with Milan theater director Giorgio Strehler, who directed her in one of Brecht’s signature works, “The Threepenny Opera,” a musical drama.

Born Maria Ilva Biolcati, the singer was often referred to as "La Rossa," meaning "redhead" in Italian, for the color of her fiery red locks. With an active career spanning decades, Milva was a musical great in her home country. Italy's Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, called her "one of the strongest interpreters of Italian songs." Her voice awakened "intense emotions" in entire generations and upheld the reputation of Italy, he said Saturday after news of her death broke.
