Italian Court Sentences Two Americans to Life in Prison

May 7, 2021
Two Americans are now sentenced to life in prison after killing a police officer in Italy.
In 2019, Finnegan Elder and Gabriel Natale thought they were buying cocaine on vacation in Rome. It was really crushed up aspirin.
They stole the backpack of the person who introduced them to the drug dealer.
Italian police dressed in plainclothes tried to recover the backpack.
That’s when authorities say Elder and Natale stabbed Officer Mario Cerciello 11 times.
Elder and Natale say they thought the police were thugs because they didn’t identify themselves and were acting in self-defense.
Elder’s lawyer says they plan to appeal the ruling.

An Italian court convicted two young Americans Wednesday for the murder of a police officer while they were on a summer holiday in Rome, with both handed life sentences.
Finnegan Lee Elder, 21, had admitted stabbing Mario Cerciello Rega during a late-night encounter in July 2019, while out with his friend Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, 20.
Prosecutors cast it as a brutal, unprovoked attack in which Elder, then 19, stabbed Cerciello 11 times with a seven-inch camping knife on a dark street near the Americans' hotel.

Americans convicted in death of Italian officer
One of two young Americans convicted Wednesday of killing a Rome police officer "is in a bad place" after being sentenced to life imprisonment, Italy's stiffest sentence, a lawyer and spokesman for his family told CBS News.
21-year-old Finnegan Lee Elder, from San Francisco, is "confused how he seemingly was punished for telling the truth. Confused how they could believe a liar and concoct a story," his spokesman Craig Peters, who is in Rome with Elder's parents, told CBS News.
