Merkel's CDU pens new ethics rules after mask scandal
DW has obtained an internal CDU document issued in the wake of several corruption-related retirements. The paper urged parliamentarians to keep in mind that they are role models for society.
The paper calls on politicians found to have mixed business with politics unacceptably to immediately quit the party
Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian sister-party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), have been rocked by corruption scandals of late. The unwelcome news of CDU and CSU politicians profiting handsomely off of coronavirus masks and the party's disastrous performance in state elections in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate have set alarm bells ringing at the party's highest levels.

COVID-19: What's the difference between face masks?
Individualist days are over
The coronavirus pandemic is very serious, and masks are rightfully mandatory, please do not get me wrong. But before medical masks became compulsory, our face coverings were just so much more colorful and individualistic.
DW's Marcel Fürstenau — sans mask
In March 2020, many Germans began sewing their own masks — because medical masks, or regular ones for that matter, were not yet widely available. Many got creative, making their own, or buying them from others. Necessity is the mother of invention, after all.
Within a matter of weeks, Germany had become a nation of mask-clad individualists. Cotton and polyester face coverings — in a plethora of colors and designs — began popping up. Some were sporting plastic face shields, too.

What will Germany's foreign policy be after Angela Merkel?
Germany's next chancellor will in all likelihood be one of two current state premiers: Armin Laschet or Markus Söder. So, where do the two conservative hopefuls stand on foreign policy?
The country's next chancellor will in all likelihood beeither Armin Laschet (l) or Markus Söder (r)
Germany's electoral race is beginning in earnest as the top candidates to replace Chancellor Angela Merkel jockey for position and credibility.
A few weeks after having been elected in January the new party leader of Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU), Armin Laschet said in an interview with Reuters: "One expects a chancellor to be experienced in both foreign and domestic policy."

Czech commuters get a cold reception on Bavarian border
Bavaria has closed its border to the Czech Republic and Austria to stem the spread of new, contagious coronavirus variants. DW's Bernd Riegert traveled to the region to see how the controversial decision is playing out.
Bavaria has closed its borders to contain the new virus variants
Pristine powder snow gleams in the sunlight. Tiny, glittering ice crystals rain from fir trees, onion-domed churches dot the hills. On this winter morning, Bavaria's sparsely populated Fichtel Mountains look like they belong in an advert for winter holiday destinations.
But this is no winter wonderland. German municipalities along the Czech border have recorded seven-day coronavirus incidence rates of over 300 cases per 100,000 residents —the highest in the entire country.

Germany: Poll shows low support for new CDU head as Merkel successor
Armin Laschet, just elected to chair Angela Merkel's CDU party, seems little preferred by Germans as a candidate to succeed her as chancellor in September. One pollster puts him on 12% with Bavaria's Markus Söder on 43%.
Armin Laschet (R) may be the new CDU head, but polls show more public support for Bavaria's Markus Söder (L)
Only a minority of Germans back Armin Laschet as the conservative candidate to succeed Angela Merkel in elections later this year, according to a new poll published on Sunday.
Laschet, North Rhine Westphalia (NRW) state's premier, won a three-way race to chair the Christian Democrats (CDU) on Saturday, the party of exiting Chancellor Merkel.

COVID: Germany debates making N95 masks mandatory
The Bavarian state premier, Markus Söder, says he will introduce legislation making N95 masks mandatory in public settings. Health experts give the plan the thumbs up: but some politicians doubt everybody can afford them
When worn properly, N95 masks protect the wearer and others
Bavarian State Premier, Markus Söder, from the Christian Social Union (CSU), is never stuck for an idea when it comes to tackling the coronavirus pandemic. Just days after he suggested vaccination should be obligatory for health workers, he has announced that from Monday, N95 masks (known as FFP2 masks in Germany and KN95 in China) will be mandatory in stores and on public transport.

Germany's stricter lockdown starts nationwide
"A major government campaign is needed to promote the willingness to be vaccinated, in which role models from the arts, sports, and politics take part," Söder said. Being vaccinated should be "be considered a civic duty," he added.
Söder is leader of the CSU, the Bavarian sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats. He has taken the line of advocating tough lockdown measures during the coronavirus pandemic and is seen as a possible contender to run for chancellor on behalf of the CDU/CSU alliance in elections later this year.

Opinion: Germany and Bavaria must not mandate COVID vaccine
Bavarian State Premier Markus Söder is pushing for mandatory coronavirus vaccination — in particular for nursing staff. The idea is ill-timed, DW's Jens Thurau writes.
Markus Söder, Bavaria's state premier and the chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU) party, has worked for his reputation as a particularly strong leader during the coronavirus pandemic. It hardly comes as a surprise, then, that he has become the most prominent German politician to push for the mandatory vaccination of health and care workers.
Alarmed by reports that people's willingness — and that includes nurses and doctors — to be vaccinated is not as high as expected, Söder is breaking a taboo that German politicians have kept since the beginning of the pandemic: They have been saying for months that, even when vaccines are available, inoculation would be voluntary.
