Marvin Scott's Jail Death Ruled Homicide, Family Call for Arrests Over 'Horrific' Video

Marvin Scott's Jail Death Ruled Homicide, Family Call for Arrests Over 'Horrific' Video

The family of a Black man, who died in a jail in Texas last month, have called for the arrests of detention officers after viewing video footage of his final moments.
Marvin Scott III's death was ruled a homicide by the Collin County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday.
In a news release, Dr. William Rohr said his findings show Scott's cause of death was "fatal acute stress response in an individual with previously diagnosed schizophrenia during restraint struggle with law enforcement." A final autopsy report is to be released at a later date.

Death of Marvin Scott III while in police custody ruled a homicide

Skinner did not provide additional detail about the four-hour period Scott was in custody or the specific circumstances that led to his death. But in early April, he fired seven officers who he said "violated well-established Sheriff's Office policies and procedures" when handling Scott, and an eighth officer under investigation resigned.
"Everyone in Collin County deserves safe and fair treatment, including those in custody at our jail. I will not tolerate less," Skinner said when announcing the firings. Six of the officers appealed their termination and one has since been reinstated, according to CBS Dallas-Fort Worth.
Scott's family viewed video footage of Scott's death on Wednesday. Family attorney Lee Merritt said the family viewed almost five hours of footage, adding that the footage showed "repeated opportunities" to provide aid to Scott, who he said "was clearly in a schizophrenic episode."

For the past four weeks, a group of up to 40 protesters has gathered outside the Collin County Jail nearly every night around 9 p.m. They hang signs, draw on the sidewalk with chalk and decorate the chain link fence, celebrating the life of Marvin Scott III, who died while in the custody of jail staff in March.
Consistently, their memorials have been taken down by county staff. But that doesn’t deter his sister, LaChay Batts, from returning every day with other community members outside the jail in McKinney.

The Collin County Sheriff's Office has fired seven detention officers involved in the death of 26-year-old Marvin Scott III. Police arrested Scott on March 14 and charged him with possessing less than two ounces of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor. He died in police custody that same day.
After being arrested in the parking lot of an Allen, Texas outlet mall for smoking marijuana, police found him "incoherent," according to Scott family attorney, Lee Merritt. Police then took Scott to the Texas Health Presbyterian hospital nearby. There, doctors found him fit for incarceration, WFAA reported.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Seven officers involved in the in-custody death of a jail inmate in Texas have been fired, a sheriff said.
The officers violated sheriff's office policies and procedures leading up to the death of Marvin Scott III, Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner said in a news release Thursday. An eighth officer resigned.
Scott, 26, was arrested March 14 at an outlet mall in Allen on a marijuana possession charge, news outlets reported. Allen officers took Scott to a hospital because he was reportedly acting erratically. Scott was released and police took him to the county jail.
