Numbers breakdown of provincial budget 'very disheartening' for Edmonton: mayor

EDMONTON --
It's been one week since the Alberta government released its 2021 budget. One hour later, Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson was telling media he was "confounded and disappointed" by what it contained for his city.
After listening to the City of Edmonton's CFO Mary Persson break down the numbers Thursday, his outlook hasn't seemed to change much, saying he's "quite frustrated."
"It may well be a jobs budget for Alberta, but it ain’t a jobs budget for Edmonton," Iveson said Thursday.
The mayor says the UCP government's latest budget hits Edmonton harder than most.
Among the biggest hits to Edmonton's coffers was due to cuts to the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI).

Here's what the City of Edmonton hopes to see in next week's provincial budget

EDMONTON --
The City of Edmonton revealed Friday its wish list for next week's provincial budget.
Members of council heard from Edmonton's Chief Financial Officer Mary Persson, who laid out administration's priorities for the fiscal year.
"Our focus for 2021 is maintaining current commitments and looking for support for those that need it most during these difficult economic times, such as small business and our partners in the housing field," Persson told council.
Among the city's priorities is the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI), which Persson says accounts for over a third of the programs in Edmonton's approved capital budget from 2019 to 2022.

Edmonton fire hydrant funding shifts would mean lower property taxes, higher water bills

Residents and businesses in Edmonton could see property taxes slightly drop next year if the city switches the cost of maintaining fire hydrants from the tax levy to utility bills.

City of Edmonton receives failing grade for fiscal transparency in C.D. Howe Institute study

Article content
Edmonton scored a failing grade from the C.D. Howe Institute for fiscal accountability and transparency in its most recent budgets and financial statements.
In the research organization’s annual report card grading the financial presentations of 31 major municipalities across Canada, Edmonton was one of only two cities to receive an “F” grade. Final scores were based on a series of criteria related to the presentation of budgets and year-end financial statements, including date of approvals, date of release and how far into the documents results are presented.
