WARSAW — An ancient Egyptian mummy once believed to be the remains of a male priest is actually the embalmed body of a woman in the third trimester of pregnancy, Polish scientists said on Friday.
Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist at the Warsaw Mummy Project, was examining a CT scan of a mummy at the National Museum in the Polish capital when she spotted something peculiar.
“When I looked at the lesser pelvis of our mummy I was interested in what was inside… I thought I saw a tiny foot,” Ozarek-Szilke said.

An Egyptian mummy previously believed to be a priest has turned out to be a pregnant woman, scientists from Warsaw University said. The discovery, first of its kind anywhere in the world, was made as part of the Warsaw Mummy Project. The researchers, who since 2015 have been working to thoroughly examine human and animal mummies from Ancient Egypt at the National Museum in Warsaw, uncovered the body’s true identity after spotting a tiny foot in the abdomen on a scan.

X-ray and CT reveal pregnant ancient Egyptian mummy

May 3, 2021 -- The patient presented after 3,000 years. X-ray and CT scans revealed first that this was not a male scribe and priest, as suspected, but in fact a woman about 25 years old, possibly a society elite from a vast necropolis in Thebes in Upper Egypt.
Moreover, the woman was pregnant when she was mummified.
The find is the only known case of an embalmed pregnant woman, according to Polish researchers from the National Museum in Warsaw, who published results of the investigation April 28 in the
Journal of Archeological Science. The discovery opens possibilities for a new understanding of pregnancy in ancient times, the development of fetuses, and the taphonomic processes of fetuses as well as uteruses.
