A group of French senators including a former defence minister will visit Taiwan this week, the island's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, with the visit coming at a time of soaring tensions between Taipei and Beijing and despite China's opposition.
A delegation led by French Senator Alain Richard is to arrive in Taiwan today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday, adding that the visitors are to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文). Richard has since 2015 served as chairman of French Senate’s Taiwan Friendship Group. He served as French minister of defense from 1997 to 2002.
