ALTON — Marquette Catholic High School Principal Michael Slaughter is retiring from teaching and education June 30.
This week he received a very special goodbye gift, as Alton officially declared Wednesday, May 5, 2021, as Michael Slaughter Day in the city.
In the official proclamation, Mayor Brant Walker said Slaughter has been “instrumental” in teaching more than 4,000 students over the course of his 42-year career.
“Michael Slaughter Day is an opportunity to recognize the tremendous service Michael has been to the Marquette Catholic High School family,” said Walker, “and an opportunity to let others know the impact of his devotion to the community.”

The Alton City Council has approved a resolution to publish a notice of sale of surplus property on Golf Road. This is the property being eyed up by a developer planning a new hotel and restaurant near the Alton Regional Multi Modal Transportation Center. The publishing of this notice is part of the process to make that happen.
The resolution was laid over at the first meeting in April as Alderman Mike Velloff requested more information on the project. Alton Mayor Brant Walker tells The Big Z this will be a nice addition to that area.

ALTON — Aldermen on Wednesday night took the first steps in possibly adding a new restaurant in Alton.
At Wednesday’s city council meeting, aldermen approved preliminary and final subdivision plats for Alton Circle Subdivision proposed by Sheppard, Morgan & Schwaab, Inc.
The area is the lot adjacent to the AT&T Store on 1725 Homer Adams Parkway in Alton. The plan is to expand the area slightly to make room for a drive-through restaurant. According to Mayor Brant Walker, the restaurant is from a nationally known brand not currently in Alton. Construction is set to begin “very soon,” Walker said.

ALTON — With the presidential inauguration happening on Wednesday, some are concerned that a protest similar to what happened at Washington D.C. could happen in Alton.
Alton Mayor Brant Walker said that, so far, the office has not received any direct threats regarding the inauguration. But he noted police will be more vigilant this week.
“Since I’ve been in office, Alton has always peacefully expressed their opinions,” Walker said. “So I’m hoping that is what we will expect come inauguration day.”
Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday activated 250 members of the Illinois National Guard for state buildings in Springfield in response to warnings issued this week by the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding threats to state capital cities in the days leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
