Anti-lockdown protest in UpTown Waterloo on Sunday, April 25.Ben Eppel / KitchenerToday Sunday marked another day of demonstrations in Uptown Waterloo, as protestors could be seen lining King Street with signs calling for an immediate end to provincial lockdown measures. The third Uptown Waterloo protest in as many weeks, Sunday’s crowd was composed of a few dozen individuals, without adherence to physical distancing or masking guidelines. Commenting on the event was Cherri Greeno, Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Information with Waterloo Regional Police (WRPS). According to Greeno, members from the WRPS COVID-19 Integrated Response Team were on site, monitoring the event and gathering potential evidence for the issuing of tickets “at a later time.” ....

KITCHENER A major artery in Waterloo is getting an upgrade. The City of Waterloo approved the University Avenue Gateway Strategy on Monday, which includes plans to transform the street from Highway 85 to Westmount Road. The city said University Avenue is the only street in Canada with three post-secondary institutions. It acts as a primary entrance for many students and visitors, so officials said it s important for it to make an impression. Improvements include separated bike lanes, wider sidewalks, more trees and green space. Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky said it s important for the city to have a unified vision. We cannot let University Avenue develop piecemeal or, at the end, we will have nothing special, he said.
