Foreign policy experts are feverishly discussing what president elect Joe Biden should do about President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Turkey, believing that the country must be high up on his list of urgent matters.
Erdoğan’s acts just this year have included stifling the media, jailing Kurdish politicians, persecuting opposition voices such as philanthropist Osman Kavala, and intervening militarily three times abroad in Syria, Libya and in a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Some experts say Biden needs to find a way to be nice to Erdoğan to stabilise NATO’s eastern flank and decouple Erdoğan from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s embrace. But should the United States make nice with Turkey at all? said author and columnist Melik Kaylan in an analysis for Forbes magazine on Tuesday.
