No. 4 Ohio State Scores Season High at No. 3 Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 4 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team came up short to No. 3 Nebraska on Saturday, 411.100-406.700, at Bob Devaney Sports Center. It was the highest overall score for the Buckeyes this year.
The Buckeyes posted season highs on pommel horse (67.050), floor (69.000), rings (68.350) and high bar (64.650). As a team, Ohio State secured a title on rings and had 10 podium finishes.
Individually, Justin Ah Chow won the floor title with a career-high 14.650 while Donovan Hewitt scored a 14.100, a new personal best, to claim the crown on rings. Jesse Tyndall posted a season-high 14.150 to win on high bar.
The Buckeyes started the meet on pommel horse, where Ah Chow received a score of 13.750 to come in third. Nebraska’s Cooper Giles won the event behind a 14.400.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team extended its win streak to three meets with a 405.500-403.900 victory over No. 3 Penn State on Sunday at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes earned their highest score of the season while handing the Nittany Lions their first loss of the year.
Ohio State had season highs on pommel horse (67.000), rings (67.350) and parallel bars (68.450). The Buckeyes also claimed team titles on rings, parallel bars and vault (71.500).
Individually, Donovan Hewitt shared the vault crown with a 14.550 and Jesse Tyndall scored a 14.300 to take first on parallel bars.
Ohio State opened the competition on floor, where Tyndall earned a 14.300 to place second. Penn State’s Matt Cormier won the event with a 14.600.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team (2-1, 1-1 Big Ten) handled No. 7 Minnesota (0-2, 0-2 Big Ten) on Saturday night with an impressive 401.050-387.250 win in the Covelli Center.
“I’m very proud of how this team came out and got the job done tonight,” said head coach Rustam Sharipov. “We are steadily getting better every week but we have to be able to finish out meets. We have to take what we’re doing in the gym and translate it to our competitions. This team is on the right path.”
The 401.050 was the highest score by the Buckeyes thus far. The squad also won every team event title for the second straight week and recorded season bests on floor, rings and parallel bars. Angel Leon captured three individual titles, the second Buckeye to do so in as many weeks.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team opened its 2021 season with a competitive and hard-fought effort against the Illinois Fighting Illini Saturday at Huff Hall on the UI campus. Illinois came away with a 402.550-396.250 victory to move to 2-0 on the season while Ohio State opens at 0-1.
Ohio State won the early team battles on floor exercise (68.750-67.650) and pommel horse (66.650-66.350) to take a 135.41-134.000 lead after the first two rotations.
The Illini came back with wins on rings (67.950-66.000) and vault (71.000-70.350) to move in front, 272.950-271.750. Illinois extended its lead after its 64.950 on parallel bars while Ohio State scored 62.900 on the horizontal bar. The home team then clinched the win with a 64.650 score on the horizontal bar while Ohio State scored 61.600 on parallel bars.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team is set to open the 2021 season on Saturday when it visits No. 3 Illinois at 2 p.m. ET. Due to COVID-19 restrictions in the state of Illinois, there is no public access to the event.

SCOUTING ILLINOIS
Illinois started its 2021 campaign with a 384.750-310.100 win over Northern Illinois last Friday in the first virtual competition in NCAA history. Evan Manivong captured event titles on floor and vault while Logan Myers, Will Hauke and Tommy Mistretta claimed the first event titles of their careers.
THE SERIES
The Illini own a 111-81-2 advantage in their all-time series with the Buckeyes. The two programs were set to meet during the 2020 season but the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The teams last went head-to-head on March 24, 2019 when Ohio State edged out Illinois, 406.600-404.000, in Columbus.
