There were plenty of empty seats and no popcorn as the Bay Area went back to the movies over the weekend.
Some of the seats were left empty on purpose, because allowing extra space is the new normal. Some seats were empty because people weren’t inclined to pay $19 for a ticket to “Tom and Jerry.”
Apryl Walker was among a handful of midday customers Saturday at the giant Metreon movie complex and shopping center at Fourth and Mission streets that opened its doors to moviegoers for the first time in months, thanks to San Francisco returning to the red tier on the pandemic safety rainbow.

I: The dream within the dream within the dream
What is it, Ferlinghetti,
Strolling in front of cars
Haunting alleyways, stairways,
San Francisco’s sex fraught avenues? In North Beach
Where XXX marks art and
Nasty commerce collide, intersect Columbus,
Telegraph Hill, Jack Kerouac Way.
You are fog whispering in from the sea
On another sunny day.
Beyond the ledges of concrete/Restaurants fall into dreams
With candlelight couples/Lost Alexandria still burns.” *
