Israel to end Covid-19 restrictions from June after vaccine success

Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said on Sunday he will not
extend the arrangement, meaning the restrictions and the Green Pass system will be revoked from the start of June.
"The economy and the citizens of Israel will get extra room to breathe," he said, but also warned that restrictions they could be re-imposed should the situation change
.
Israel will still keep its borders closed to most incoming travellers, though it has started to let in small groups of vaccinated tourists.
The health ministry will also re-examine the requirement to wear face masks in enclosed spaces.

World's largest iceberg breaks off from Antarctica ice shelf

A giant slab of ice, more than four times the size of Abu Dhabi, has broken off from the frozen edge of Antarctica into the Weddell Sea, becoming the largest iceberg afloat in the world.
Its surface area spans 4,320 square kilometres. It measures 175 km in length and 25 km in breadth, the European Space Agency said on Wednesday.
By comparison, the capital of the United Arab Emirates has an area of 972 sq km. Spain's popular tourist island of Majorca in the Mediterranean occupies 3,640 sq km, while the US state of Rhode Island has a land mass of only 2,678 sq km.

Tunisia's vanishing middle class braces for proposed IMF austerity

Yathreb Hajri knows where every dinar of her modest government salary goes.
There’s the cost of trainers for her son, 12, who won’t stop growing, extra internet for her daughter, 14, to do schoolwork while in-person classes are suspended in Tunisia and petrol for her husband’s car.
But one thing sucks up more of her earnings than anything else: food.
“Even as a government employee,” said Ms Hajri, 41, who works for the Higher Education Ministry, “we are living paycheck to paycheck. My salary is barely enough for the family to eat.”
Ms Hajri and her family are part of Tunisia’s vanishing middle class that is feeling the strain of decades of economic downturn. They’re now facing a new crisis as Tunisia weighs austerity measures that would see subsidies on essentials like food and fuel eliminated in favour of direct cash payments to the poor.

Libya presidency denies attack on hotel it frequents

"There was no kidnapping, gunfire, or an attack on me or the hotel," the head of the Presidency Council's office, Mohamed Al Mabrouk, said in a social media video, adding he had been in the hotel at the time of the incident.
Mr Mabrouk said the head of the Presidency Council, which functions as Libya's head of state, would meet with the groups involved.
The Presidency Council was chosen through a UN-facilitated process that also selected a new Government of National Unity that took office in March, replacing rival administrations in east and west.
Armed groups based in western Libya have voiced anger at the Government of National Unity's Foreign Minister, Najla El Mangoush.

Parcel bomb attacks blow up five opposition figures in Myanmar

The latest blasts were in a village in the southern central part of the nation in Western Bago and occurred at about 5pm on Monday, the Myanmar Now news portal reported, citing a resident.
Domestic media also reported that a junta-appointed local administrator had been stabbed to death in the main city, Yangon.
Three blasts were triggered when at least one parcel bomb exploded at a house in the village, killing a regional lawmaker from Ms Suu Kyi's National League of Democracy party, as well as the three police officers and a resident, the report said.
Another police officer involved in the civil disobedience movement was also severely wounded after his arms were blown off by the explosion, the resident was cited as saying. The officer was receiving treatment in a hospital.

Sudan's women flogged in public by young men 'inspired by' violent social media campaign

SHARE
Incidents of women being assaulted in Khartoum are on the rise. A number of attacks, including ones where women are whipped, slapped in the face and beaten in public by young men, have been recorded as a violent social media campaign seeking to “punish the immodestly dressed,” takes to the streets.
Just over two years after Islamist autocrat Omar Al Bashir was removed from power, the illegal attacks echo his notorious but now repealed rules that discriminated against women and restricted their personal freedoms.
Several women in Khartoum gave identical accounts of young men patrolling the streets, lashing their victims before speeding off in their cars.
