Bills follow draft board, get a glut of edge rushers: What's the plan?

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- To no one's surprise, the Buffalo Bills selected a defensive end -- Miami's Gregory Rousseau -- with the No. 30 overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft.
With veterans Jerry Hughes and Mario Addison entering the final year of their respective contracts in 2021 and few other building blocks at the position, it made sense for general manager Brandon Beane to invest another premium pick into an edge rusher.
But few, including ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr., expected Beane to double down and draft another defensive end -- Wake Forest's Carlos Basham Jr. -- with the team's second-round pick. Less than 24 hours after calling Rousseau and 2020 second-round pick AJ Epenesa the Bills' hopeful starters of the future, Beane added another name to the defensive line room.

A few things caught me off guard on Thursday night, the first night of the 2021 NFL Draft. For starters, Dave Gettleman made the metaphorical right turn on a NASCAR race and traded back with the Chicago Bears, dropping nine picks and securing a 2022 first-rounder, fourth-rounder, and a 2021 fifth-round selection.
The top tier of pass-catchers were all off the board after the Eagles jumped the Giants to select DeVonta Smith, yet the Giants caught me off guard once again by going pass catcher at the 20th selection; it wasn’t Ole Miss’ Elijah Moore, nor was it Minnesota’s Rashod Bateman, but it was an electric playmaker out of Florida named Kadarius Toney.

Gregory Rousseau checked quite a few boxes for the Buffalo Bills.
Height (6-feet-7-inches) and weight (266) that Buffalo looks for off the edge? Check. Insane wingspan (83 1/4-inch wingspan
)? Check. Versatility to play across the defensive line? Check.
Rousseau also checked another important box for the Bills: Production. The defensive lineman recorded 15.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss as a redshirt freshman with the Miami Hurricanes in 2019. Following his breakout season, expectations were high for Rousseau in 2020 but he opted out due to COVID-19 concerns. That opt out and a pro day performance that did not leap off the page led to Rousseau falling down the draft board and into the Bills’ lap.

Of course, they all have other needs as well.

In the NFL, this time of the year is chockfull of subterfuge. Teams are doing their best not to tip their hands about what they will (or want to) do in the NFL Draft, but information gets out. Still, what is real? What is fake?
Some teams leak info to try and muster up trade value for their pick, or to turn other teams off their scent about who they intend on picking. Last year, near the draft a report conveniently leaked that the Giants were meeting with quarterback Justin Herbert. That didn’t amount to anything other than speculation.
