A massive investment is needed for the national grid to integrate increasing amounts of renewable energy and to meet a rising demand for electricity.
This comes as a scheme allowing individuals, community groups, business owners and farmers to sell electricity to the national grid - if they generate it from solar panels, wind turbines and other sustainable energy technologies - looks set to be in place this summer.
The plan is part of the Government s Microgeneration Support Scheme , which is set to begin in July and is presently in public consultation until mid-February. ....

New incentives planned for microgeneration

New incentives planned for microgeneration

Homes, schools and businesses are set to receive new incentives later this year to invest in solar panels and other ways to generate their own electricity.
A key change is that they will be able to sell any excess generated back into the grid.
While most domestic solar installations do not supply all of the electricity needs of a home, there can be times when they supply more than is needed. For example, if a house is empty on a summer s day, solar panels can generate significant amounts of electricity that is not exported to the grid. ....

'Imminent' scheme for farmers to sell renewable electricity to grid welcomed

January 14, 2021 11:13 am
The imminent introduction of a Microgeneration Support Scheme (MSS) – which will pay for surplus renewable electricity generated and supplied to the grid by homes, farms and business – has been welcomed by the Micro Renewable Energy Federation (MREF).
Commenting this morning (Thursday, January 14) on the launch of a public consultation process on the new MSS, MREF chairman Pat Smith said:
“It is critical that the new MSS is practical and that it makes economic sense for wide sectors of society to adopt microgeneration to both reduce costs from bought-in electricity and to earn some income from selling surplus to the grid. ....

Microgeneration consultation welcomed 'with caution' by opposition party

January 14, 2021 12:39 pm
Sinn Féin has said it welcomes today’s (Thursday, January 14) news of the opening of a consultation on a new Microgeneration Support Scheme “with caution”.
Party spokesperson on climate justice Lynn Boylan has raised concerns of “unnecessary barriers blocking access to ordinary people”.
Individuals and communities are invited to submit views on the design of a Microgeneration Support Scheme, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan has announced today.
“Microgeneration has the potential to spread the benefits of the transition throughout society. That outcome is not automatically guaranteed, and devil is in the detail,” Senator Boylan said. ....
