Debate over re-implementing mask mandates amid rise in illnesses

Growing concerns over a spike in COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses in children have led to discussions about the possibility of bringing mask mandates back. Questions about a potential return to mandatory masking come as Ontario’s top doctor was asked to “urgently explore” re-issuing a mask mandate in schools, and it's a question some Londoners are also asking.

'Every option on the table' as LTC union escalates push for vaccination

LONDON, ONT. --
The call from London Transit workers for priority vaccination grew louder on Thursday with the backing of the Amalgamated Transit Union’s (ATU) National President John Di Nino.
“Our operators intersect daily with hundreds of riders. Nationally it’s about 1.5 million rides every month,” says Di Nino.
There has been one recovery this week, lowering the number of active COVID-19 cases among London Transit workers from seven to six.
Two of the employees are hospitalized.
The union is making a nationwide push for adequate COVID-19 protection in the workplace, and to prioritize transit workers for vaccination.
In Ontario, transit workers are among a massive cohort of essential workers (who can’t work from home) still awaiting an opportunity to be vaccinated.

London officially enters orange-restrict under COVID-19 framework

MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ONT. --
Middlesex-London and Elgin-Oxford are officially in the orange-restrict zone under Ontario's COVID-19 response framework.
The change will took effect at midnight Monday and will remain in place for at least two weeks.
The decision comes as Middlesex-London marks two full weeks with no deaths.
"It's something we absolutely should be celebrating as a community, and that celebration should not be in large numbers indoors. Let's make sure we keep it as safe as possible," says Middlesex-London Health Unit Medical Officer of Health Dr. Chris Mackie.
But, Mackie adds that an increase in COVID-19 variants in the region remains a concern.

Prematurely lifting COVID-19 restrictions would risk dangerous rebound

LONDON, ONT. --
Lower daily case counts and the decision to reopen schools in the region are no reason to relax the shutdown, according to the medical officer of health.
Two weeks in, pandemic-weary Londoners admit reaching the halfway point of the provincial Stay at Home Order doesn’t make the restrictions any easier.
“I like to keep people's health in the forefront of my mind, but I know its hard for businesses,” acknowledges student Gabby Schoettle.
“It’s getting a little harder, but we need to keep everybody safe,” says Mari-Lee McGuire as she walks through Wortley Village.
With a daughter who’s a first responder, McGuire says obeying the current restrictions is critical, but it’s OK to miss what we’re all going without.
