(Bloomberg) -- Los Angeles has reinstated indoor mask requirements. Sydney has tightened lockdown measures. Athletes in Japan for the Olympics are testing positive for Covid-19.
On Monday, many got a jarring reminder that the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t gone away, with anxious investors worried the resurgences could erode economic growth and reverse a rally in equities that had reached record highs as recently as last week.
“The rise in the variant, the ‘Oh my gosh, are we going to get shut down? And then even if we don’t get shut down, is growth going to slow?’” are thoughts driving the selloff, said Kim Forrest, founder and chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners.

If Only I Knew How to Prevent a Stock Market Crash -- the Red Lights Are Flashing

(AP Photo/Richard Drew, File)
My entry in today’s “Make the Reader’s Eyes Glaze Over” contest is based on this story published a couple of days ago by Bloomberg.
My expertise in investing in financial markets is derived from my decades-long experience in losing money from the limited individual investor trading that I have done. I got quite good at it at one point.
I remember vividly the warnings given to me by friends in the business who said “Buying based on factors like “price-to-revenue” numbers — when the company has never actually made a profit — is a questionable long-term strategy.”  I should have taken that advice to heart back in the March 2000 “Doc.com bubble.”

Helena Bailey breaks her silence on husband Mike's death after TV weatherman's fatal stroke

The widow and mother-of-four also revealed her family were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support following Mike's passing less than two weeks ago.
'I knew he was loved, but had no idea how much,' said Helena, adding, 'The beautiful words relayed by so many people mean the world to us.'
Peaceful: Helena told Woman's Day that the 71-year-old TV veteran 'quietly slipped away' with his family by his side
Bailey married Helena, also known as 'Miss Helena' from Romper Room, in 1986. They remained together for 35 years until his death
Mike and Helena married in 1986, after meeting at a Channel 7 telethon in 1981 and subsequently falling in love.

Stake sale: Record stock sales from money-losing firms ring the alarm bells

By Lu Wang and Vildana Hajric
If you think a rush by companies to sell their shares is a bad omen for the market, imagine a scenario where most of the sales come from firms that don’t make money.
It’s happening now. Since the end of March, almost 100 unprofitable companies, including GameStop Corp. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., have raised money through secondary offerings, twice as many as coming from profitable firms, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Bloomberg
Granted, troubled companies are tapping into buoyant demand during a 16-month rally to beef up their balance sheets. And it’s further evidence that the capital market functions as smoothly as it’s supposed to. Yet some warn that the flood of shares coming from money losers is becoming extreme.

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.
Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

WWE Reportedly Trying To Sign "Speedball" Mike Bailey

“Speedball” Mike Bailey is reportedly headed to WWE soon.
It was reported this week by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE is working on signing Bailey, and getting work Visa issues taken care of so that they can bring him in.
It was reported back in March 2016 that Bailey was stopped trying to enter the United States to wrestle for EVOLVE. He was then banned from entering the country for 5 years. He had been trying to secure a Visa to work with CZW but progress was slow, which led to the initial incident.
Bailey appeared on his Twitch show today with fiancee Veda Scott and laughed when asked about the news of his potential WWE signing.

(Bloomberg) -- With Bitcoin in freefall, many of the newcomers who helped power the cryptocurrency to stratospheric levels this year are also some of the loudest about getting burned.
Across Twitter, the hashtag #cryptocrash was trending as retail investors bemoaned their sudden losses and others cried out to “hodl,” an industry term meaning “hold on for dear life” that supporters use to refer to buying and holding. Coinbase Global Inc., the biggest U.S. crypto exchange, crashed at one point as users flooded the site, while Asia-centered rival Binance temporarily disabled Ether withdrawals due to network congestion.

Skins partners: Here's who the Skins cast are dating now

Skins was one of the best shows we all indulged in growing up. Despite it giving us all a misrepresentation of what college and/or sixth form would be like, it dived into issues like drug abuse, mental health, eating disorders, and sexuality.
There were some pretty messed up things that happened in Skins, and every young person who watched all three generations of the show attended college only to be met with disappointment. In reality, studying for your A-levels was a lot less chaotic than a group of loud teenagers in Bristol.
Eight years on from the show’s end, the cast of Skins are not teenagers anymore. Many have made it big in the acting world from starring in Games of Thrones to Netflix originals. But one thing we all want to know is the love lives and partners of the Skins cast from Channel 4’s greatest teen drama.

Prices Rise 4.2 Percent in April; Fastest Since 2008

The Consumer Price Index rose in April by 4.2 percent -- the biggest rise in consumer prices since 2008 and jittery markets reacted negatively.

Stocks Tumble the Most Since February; Yields Jump: Markets Wrap

(Bloomberg) -- The S&P 500 Index slumped the most since February and bond yields jumped after a report showed inflation rose more than forecast, adding to concern that price pressures will stifle a recovery in the world’s biggest economy. The technology sector continued to lead the retreat in equities, with Apple and Microsoft pacing a 2.6% decline in the Nasdaq 100. Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF resumed its slide, bringing this year’s loss to about 18%. After closing at a record high on Friday, the benchmark S&P 500 dropped 2.14%. Energy was the only one of the 11 industry sectors to finish in the green. Treasury yields surged the most since March. “The markets have been hovering around all-time highs with a lot of the reopening trade already priced in,” said Mike Loewengart, managing director of investment strategy at E*Trade Financial. “So it’s not out of the question that the outsized inflation read could bring us back down to earth a bit.” The debate over whether inflation will be persistent enough to force the Federal Reserve to tighten policy sooner than current guidance suggests comes as abundant stimulus has powered a rally in global equities, raising concerns valuations had become expensive. Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida said he was surprised by the rise in consumer prices and “we would not hesitate to act” to bring inflation down to its goals if needed. The consumer price index increased 0.8% from the prior month after a 0.6% gain in March. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the so-called core CPI rose 0.9% from March. “The CPI data point feeds into a myopic narrative that the U.S. is overheating and the Fed is one step away from tightening,” said Mike Bailey, director of research at FBB Capital Partners. “Bears will feast on this tightening theme in the short term, but my sense is inflation will prove fleeting and markets will revert back to a more bullish view of moderate growth and lower risk of Fed tightening until we get to a full recovery.” Elsewhere, the claim among advocates that Bitcoin is an inflation hedge appears to be in question after the CPI report. The digital asset slumped as much as 5.8% to around $53,600. European stocks closed mostly higher, lifted by optimism about economic re-openings and booming commodities. Copper and iron ore were on course for new records amid a broadening commodities boom. Oil was steady above $65 per barrel. The biggest U.S. pipeline is still closed in the wake of a cyberattack, leading to acute fuel shortages in some parts of the nation. MLIV’s Question of the Day: How Priced In Is a European Reopening? Meeting via Zoom Saturday, Edmonds City Councilmembers discuss the budgeting process with consultant Mike Bailey and City Finance Director Dave Turley, bottom row.
Should the City of Edmonds move from a one-year to a two-year budget cycle? How can the city better engage citizens in the budget process? What should the city prioritize and de-emphasize in the 2022 budget? Those were among the topics discussed during the Edmonds City Council’s budget retreat Saturday afternoon via Zoom.
The meeting facilitator was consultant Mike Bailey, a former finance director for the cities of Redmond, Renton and Lynnwood, who also ran a similar budget retreat for the council in 2020.

Remembering Herndon's History: The Road Sirs Car Club

UpdatedMon, May 3, 2021 at 9:32 am ET

By Barbara Glakas
HERNDON, VA — Car clubs were popular in Virginia in the 1950s and 1960s. They gave young men a strong sense of identity and the opportunity to meet and associate with other car enthusiasts in their surrounding communities. With their car ownership — and through the use of plaques, jackets, patches, and license plate holders ' the members would proudly display their car club affiliation.
Fairfax and Vienna were known to have car clubs. The Town of Herndon was no exception. The club in Herndon was a club called the Road Sirs. That club's heyday was between the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s.

Local woman continues fight for answers in brother's death - Portsmouth Daily Times

Local woman continues fight for answers in brother’s death
By Patrick Keck - [email protected]
PORTSMOUTH — Last week’s arraignment of a former Scioto County Sheriff’s corrections officer initiated the court proceedings of the alleged 2020 murder of one county jail inmate. It is also the beginning of what one area woman hopes to be justice.
Since June, Karen Skaggs has been asking why, how, and who caused her brother to die following the May 26 altercation. Now with charges read and a not guilty plea from defendant Billy Thompson, answers could become a possibility.
“I feel like there’s finally being some justice brought forward,” she said in a Thursday interview. The charges of murder, voluntary manslaughter, and reckless homicide were pleasing to her, but not the fact that Thompson could sign-on to his own bond set at $100,000. “Overall, I am very happy that charges were brought, and somebody is being held accountable for this.”
