The Petit Creek fire near Merritt was sparked on the weekend and quickly grew on Monday due to high winds. There was no lightning in the area, so the BC Wildfire Service has assumed it to be a human-caused blaze. Evacuation alerts were issued on Mondau by the Thompson -Nicola Regional District for properties in the Canford and Miller Estates subdivision, in electoral areas N and M. On Tuesday, the wildfire service said it had dispatched 42 personnel, two pieces of heavy equipment and two helicopters to fight the flames. The Kamloops Fire Centre has seen 1,646 hectares burned to date. Fire information officer Gagan Lidhran said that while early season fire activity is not unusual, unseasonably warm temperatures as of late are drying out ground fuel that has not yet had a chance to green up or take on moisture from precipitation. ....
April 20, 2021 - 10:26 AM A wildfire burning near Merritt is estimated to be 100 hectares in size and is still out of control. The Petit Creek wildfire, northwest of Merritt, was first discovered April 18, along with a wildfire at Buck Ridge, which is now under control at 0.5 ha in size. Homes in two different parts of the Thompson Nicola Regional District remain on evacuation alert, including the Miller Estates subdivision as well as the Canford community. There are 42 B.C. Wildfire crew members on site today, April 20, along with two pieces of heavy equipment and two helicopters, said B.C. Wildfire Service fire information officer Gagan Lidhran. ....
Addresses impacted in Canford are 2757, 2797, 2815, 2861 and 2901 Merritt Spences Bridge Hwy 8. Addresses impacted in the Miller Estates subdivision are 1101, 1161, 1200, 1581, 1693, 2341 and 2437 Merritt Spences Bridge Hwy 8, 1256 – 1852 Miller Rd. and 2305 Woodward Rd. In addition to the wildfire in the Lower Nicola, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District is also seeing fire activity in the western part of the region, near 16 Mile, north of Cache Creek. The regional district notes the early wildfires and the current dry conditions are a reminder to remain prepared to respond in the event of an emergency. At this time, the situation in Lower Nicola is not an evacuation order, but an alert to ensure residents can make preparations in case it becomes necessary to evacuate. April 19, 2021 - 7:24 AM Three wildfires near Merritt are forcing more than a dozen residences to be prepared to evacuate. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has put the homes in two different parts of the regional district, including the Miller Estates subdivision as well as the Canford community, on evacuation alert as of 10 p.m. last night, April 18. One fire south of Merritt was discovered near Coldwater April 15 and is estimated at three hectares in size. Another fire to the west near Petit Creek, discovered April 18, is currently listed at 100 ha and a third fire in the same area is estimated at a half ha by B.C. Wildfire. ....
