Hontiveros wants DICT monitoring on DITO services after reports of 'poor service' from consumers

Hontiveros wants DICT monitoring on DITO services after reports of 'poor service' from consumers

Senator Risa Hontiveros has asked the Department of Information Communications and Technology (DICT) to monitor the performance of the DITO Telecommunity Corporation as she cited consumer complaints on the so-called third telco’s "poor services."
In a statement, Hontiveros said the DICT must forfeit its P25.7-billion performance bond if the China-backed telecommunications company failed to deliver its promises.
“Noong una, ayon sa DITO, gaganda daw ang kompetisyon dahil magkakaroon ng ikatlong telco. Mayroon pa silang sinasabing ‘near-Singapore’ daw na internet speed. Nasaang banda na 'yan ngayon? Sa dami ng reklamo tungkol sa kanila ngayon, parang mas nabigyan lang ng sakit ng ulo ang mga Pilipino,”  Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros warns against bill allowing 100% foreign ownership of public utilities

“If foreigners are allowed 100 percent ownership of our public utilities, it will pave the way for China to own and have full control of crucial infrastructure in the country,” Hontiveros said.

Philippines grants 25-year franchise for DITO Telecommunity

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the bill granting DITO Telecommunity Corp., the country's third major telecommunication service provider, a new 25-year franchise.
The President signed on Tuesday Republic Act No. 11537, renewing for 25 years the franchise granted to DITO, previously known as Mindanao Islamic Telephone Company.
With the renewed franchise, Dito Telecommunity can operate its telecom network until 2046. Its current congressional franchise expires in April 2023.
The franchise places DITO on firmer ground to compete with the two dominant networks, Globe Telecom and PLDT.
Dito Telecommunity, partly owned by Davao businessman and Duterte campaign donor Dennis Uy, was made the country’s third telco player during the Duterte administration.

MANILA, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- DITO Telecommunity Corp., one of the major telecom players in the Philippines, is all set for commercial rollout on March 8, the company said on Tuesday.
DITO Chief Administrative Officer Adel Tamano announced the commercial launch a day after the company passed the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) first network audit.
On Monday, the NTC confirmed that DITO has met its initial population coverage and minimum average internet speed commitments to the Philippine government.
DITO said the company, which is owned by Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy and China Telecom, will offer its services first in the country's southern Mindanao region and central Visayas region.
