Cracks on ground not a worry: Assam Geologists | Guwahati News

GUWAHATI: Geologists in Assam have said there is nothing to fear as of now though some fissures have appeared on the ground in different parts of the state after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit the state on Wednesday morning followed by several aftershocks.
Geologist Nababrot Gogoi told TOI, “Fissures developed due to tectonic movements and sometimes ground water oozes out through these fissures. Sometimes, clay or sand also oozes out with water. It is a natural phenomenon.”
He further added, “If you minutely observe then you will see that the fissures were not developed haphazardly. These were developed in an alignment. Though there is no such danger, the fissures will be very risky if earthquakes continue to occur frequently. A part of the soil may subside and another part may rise. This is called neo-tectonic activity.”
