'Miss India is like a trophy for life. Being part of it is a significant achievement,' exclaims Gauahar Khan in an exclusive interview!

Gauahar Khan's journey from clinching the prestigious title of Femina Miss India International 22 years ago to her illustrious career today is nothing short of inspiring. Through her hard work, dedication, and unwavering faith, she has carved a path that has not only defined her success but has also inspired countless others. In this exclusive interview, Gauahar reflects on the highlights and challenges that have shaped her remarkable journey, from her days as a top model to becoming a beloved host and actress. Join us as we delve into the life of this multifaceted personality, exploring the moments that have defined her career and the experiences that have shaped her into the person she is today. Excerpts:

Gauahar, your journey, which began with Femina Miss India, has been truly inspiring. Could you walk us through the highlights and challenges that have shaped this remarkable journey?
Where do I begin? It's been Masha'Allah 22 years, and only a few people can have the good fortune of actually experiencing such a long, relevant, and impactful career trajectory. I feel incredibly grateful because you can only put in so much work, dedication and struggle in your journey. However, you define it. But ultimately, it's the Almighty above who orchestrates the opportunities along the way. So, I truly believe that God had a plan for me because He saw my hard work and dedication and kept opening up more paths for me. After becoming Miss India, I was fortunate enough to be noticed by some of the best choreographers in the country. I started modelling and walking for renowned designers. A lot of credit goes to all the choreographers who immediately gave me work after becoming Miss India, like Lubna Adam, Mark Robinson, Anu Hoja, Apitania, and Asha Vidyan—Also, credit to the coordinators who called me for jobs like Fabi's and Cookie.
I'm truly grateful to every person who saw potential in me and started giving me work. Although I became one of the top models in the country and worked for renowned designers, my heart always belonged to the performing arts. I wanted to dance, act, and showcase my talent. Fortunately, right after Miss India, I also became a TV host on music channels like B4U and Zoom, with Zoom being a channel of Times of India itself. From there, many people saw potential in me, and one thing led to another, eventually leading to films after participating in 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa'. I would say that my career and life have resulted from prayers, blessings, and a strong work ethic. One thing led to another, and I truly believe in that.

Representing India on the international stage must have been an exhilarating experience. Could you share some of the most unforgettable moments from your international pageant journey?
I won the title of Miss India International in 2002, and then I represented India at Miss International, held in Japan in 2002. It was truly a blessing for me, as my father had lived in Japan for 14 years of his life while I was a baby. Growing up, I always had a fascination with Japan, and winning a title that took me there for the first time felt like a gift from God. It was an amazing experience with over 100 countries participating and meeting people from different nationalities who were all kind to each other. I remember Miss Lebanon, who became one of my best friends during the pageant and eventually won. Her name was Christine, and I cherished our friendship. Miss Philippines was also a dear friend of mine. As an 18-year-old, experiencing all of this was truly remarkable. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent India, wearing the sash with 'India' written on it. Looking back, it feels like a historical fact, but talking about it brings tears to my eyes. It's easy to forget the enormity of such experiences in life, but reminiscing about it now fills me with emotion. It was a deeply fulfilling experience that played a significant role in shaping me into the person I am today.

Looking back at your time at Femina Miss India, what standout memories or experiences do you hold dear to your heart?
I've always maintained this, and I'm not just saying it because of this interview. Throughout my life, I've consistently upheld the value of the training we received in 2002 under the guidance of Lubna Adams, Rhea Pillay, and all the fitness experts like Diane Pandey, Sameer, and Karan, who were our trainers. Trust me when I say those 40 days of training laid the foundation for the professional I am today. The training was exceptional, providing a holistic approach that taught me the importance of time management, kindness, and interpersonal skills in both personal and professional life. Without that training, I wouldn't be half the professional I am today. Waking up at 4:00 a.m. and hitting the gym at 5:00 a.m. became routine. I have a beautiful memory of running on the treadmill, motivating myself to push further each time, and envisioning the outcome.

As we celebrate the 60th edition of Femina Miss India, how do you perceive the evolution of this iconic pageant over the years?
I recall how Miss India was a national event when we were kids. The excitement and fervour surrounding it were unforgettable; we could remember the names of every single participant and recognize many faces. Miss India is like a trophy for life. Being part of it is a significant achievement because it selects only 25 to 27 girls from across the country each year. It's a big deal. Seeing the kind of impact Miss India has now and the exposure Indian girls receive worldwide after winning pageants is incredible. The level of marketing support and fame they garner is astounding. I feel deeply honored to have been a part of this phenomenon, and I genuinely hope it continues forever.

Your journey inspires countless young women who aspire to participate in Femina Miss India. What is your message to those aspiring beauties?
I have a family member who shares the same aspiration. My young niece really dreams of participating in Miss India. She's just as captivated by the Miss India phenomenon as I am. She truly dedicates herself to it. I can see the effort she puts in every day, working hard to lose weight, get in shape, improve her speech, and build her confidence. I admire her passion and enthusiasm in aspiring to be part of Miss India. To all the girls out there, I want to emphasize that there are no shortcuts to success; hard work is essential. Participating in Miss India is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime; it's not something you forget after participating. Ensure that you approach it with passion, dedication, and the respect it deserves.

Lastly, please tell us more about your upcoming projects.
Well, I recently wrapped up my role as a host on 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa'. It's incredible to think that I was a contestant on the show ten years ago. Back in 2009, I participated as a celebrity contestant. Fast forward to 2024, and I had the honor of becoming the host of the same show. It's a significant achievement for me, and I'm truly grateful for it. Mashallah, even after 22 years since winning Miss India, I'm still relevant in the industry, and I'm genuinely thankful for everything. Currently, I'm involved in shooting two films set to be released soon, and I've also signed on for another project, which I'll begin shooting for shortly. There are plenty of exciting things on the horizon.
