I have used many mills over the years including "High End" Schaublin. For me the Bridgeport is the most versatile design for general use, especially for home use. Not the most rigid machine but very little that it can not do. Spares availability is good and plenty of machines around, patience is required to find one that is not to worn but they are around. Mine is a 2002 machine I have had around 10 years with little or no faults.

Thanks very much I currently have very little of my own equipment. I can access a lathe but on a somewhat ad hoc basis. as much as anything I am quite interested in using some of the skills and techniques in my working life as a teacher in cinematography and film making. Thanks to David, Harry, Bill and George for your kind welcome. Bill, I imagine that Buxton is a very pleasant spot to retire, a little bit more peaceful than S10, which is looking up a bit these days, we have a couple more cafes now on Crookes main street and a few less empty shop fronts!
In response to James' questions: The magnetic strips are easily cut to length. I think I just used tin snips. The aluminium extrusions obviously need to be cut with a hacksaw. The mounting for the display is fixed to a thick aluminium plate behind the pressed-steel cover. This reinforces the mounting substantially. Regarding my thinking behind how I mounted the scales and readers, it was all about future-proofing.
